Re: HID kits on the cheap.

I now understand what Techy meant when he said the projector set up itself was about 15-20 years old.

After reading a vendor review on the Mazda forums, he said that while dropping in a new set of HID's or switching out the lens of your current HID system will help, the overall design of the projector is not set up for the lighting you want.

thats why people do entire retrofits to their existing housings.

maybe if someone wants to donate a headlight to me ill purchase 1 lense from ebay for an Audi or a TL and see if it makes enough of a difference.
But i really think the headlight as a whole is outdated.

Re: HID kits on the cheap.

I don't understand. I can see perfectly with my low beams and I very rarely get brighted. I have not ridden in a car with better low beam coverage than my svx with HID's.

Re: HID kits on the cheap.

Is it just me or are there a lot of extra wires with these kits?

Re: HID kits on the cheap.

I thought I read somewhere that the 7 series BMW projectors would work also.

Re: HID kits on the cheap.

some of the BMW lenses will work.

After much searching, i found that almost any 3" lens should work. (im looking at a set out of a smashed evo right now.)

im thinking about starting a headlight project.
all i need is an extra set of headlights.

Eh, there are some extra wires. The extension for the lead plug isn't necessary if you want the ballast right near the headlamp.

I installed mine today. I can definitely tell a difference between my old Halogen 9005 (fitted in 9006 slots) and these new HID's. 4500k 35w bulbs. Funny thing is when they turn on, they're at like 8000k for a few seconds then go back to the 4500k color.
Comparison shot:

Wiring mess behind the right bulb (it was 25 degrees outside today, I'll fix that later).

All installed:

Compared with my 100w H3's:

Well, I'm scheduled to receive them on the 10th, so we'll see if I get the Apexcones or the DDMs. <crosses fingers>

The new projectors have less light loss than first and second generation projectors. Beam spread is more concentrated below the cutoff with less light scatter above the cutoff line.

I almost did TSX projectors but their housing is oval, so it would require some extensive cutting. In the end I just left everything the way it was.

Re: HID kits on the cheap.

They shipped mine almost the day after I called and spoke with them. It looks like that's happened for others on here, too. I'd say keep calling until you get a live person.
