Is that why he ditched the other project?

Just getting into this now. I really want to add some more features to the SVX's computer, so I read through this whole thread this morning.

I was esspecially dissapointed when I got to the part where people started using usb cables, as I was begining to think no one knew that they already exist. I wanted to be the first to streamline it .
Oh well, perhaps I'll at least be the first to have these features already built into the car

So yeah, one more person messing with it now.

Okay got a new serial cable from Automation direct and it seems to be working. I now have a red light on the board when I write to the ECU, suspect that this is the ECU talking back to the laptop but can't be sure. The problem now is that none of the programs I have tried pick up data coming back. I am not sure why this is. This is even correct with the Hex Com Tool. Any suggestions?
Tony

Can anyone tell me if the red led on the board works when the signal is out going or replying to the laptop?

Tony,

If your unit is sending data OK, but not seeing any response back then most likely the potentiometer needs adjusting. Try running the selectmonitordump program, start it logging from address 8000. Then adjust the pot a little and see if any data comes back.

Phil.

GRREAT thread ! SVX 92 selectmonitor.ini needed

Volks, New to the network, I've owned an SVX MY92 engine for seven years. It lives in a 4wd Volkswagen Westfalia and currently is beset with demons. Details available on request ... In short we seem to not be able to retreive codes via the usual pin shorting from the ecu although the fault light sets and resets...

I was pointed to your group via Kevin's WRX site.

Is there available an ini file that will allow the selectmonitor code to handle the SVX as a plug-in solution? I have reviewed the work by the excellent fellow in the UK and it seems he's almost there.

cheers,

anasasi

Hi, Welcome to the site.

The ini file is on my website. Not easy to find though because my website is a real mess and much of the info on it is out of date compared with our current knowledge.

http://www.alcyone.org.uk/ssm/ecu/SelectMonitor.ini

I am not 100% sure about some of these variables, so check back every now and again for new versions of the file.

Hi, and you are very welcome to the site.

What you describe sounds unusual, but so are many things. If you had the correct select monitor, and the correct cassette to work it, the dealerships were able to query the ECU on the early cars using the select monitor, rather than using the blinking power light that most of us rely on.

However, when you read up on various codes and problem solving modes, when all wiring looms and connections are checked out to be secure and connected, one of the suggested faults that is common to all is either a bad ECU block connector, or a bad ECU. The solution suggested is very often "Replace ECU"

In your case I would suggest this as a start point. You should be able to buy one cheaply from a breaker's yard. Make sure you get one from an early model, later OBD 11 ones are sure to be loaded with different software.

[BTW, don't neglect to check the integrity of your wiring looms and connectors, if you have something grounding where it shouldn't be, you will cook the replacement ECU as well! ]

Joe

Angry On going saga

Well, PayPal approved my claim after UpNorth wouldn't respond to them either and I got a whole $9.10 back of my $80.00. I have sent PMs, PayPal has sent e-mails and I called cell number provided---Nothing!!!! Hope UpNorth is having a nice Christmas wherever he is and enjoying my $70.90. What a scammer.

I think the UpNorth stuff should be split from this thread, personally...

I'm making progress on figuring out the ECU, but there is still a lot of work to do. So far there's not really much worth posting about. If you can read assembler then you can see the latest progress at http://www.alcyone.org.uk/ssm/analys...-JDM-SVX-EG33/

I was talking to a tuner a while back and he said that we could do some tuning with what we already know about the ECU. He suggested setting the entire AFR map to 14.7:1 then hooking up a wide band and tweaking the MAF voltage to airflow map until the wideband is actually reading 14.7 all the way across the rev range. Having calibrated the ECU in this way, you can start tweaking the AFR map to make it leaner or richer as you require.

I didn't understood everything he was saying, but it sounded like a reasonable way to do it.

Did UpNorth ever sort out the problems people were having with his adapters?
