Sensitive Airbags deployed, what now?

HELP... I need a set of TAN airbags for My 96 SVX.. They both deployed when I hit a deep pothole in a dark parking lot. (Didn't even knock my hat off.. LOL)
I hate to turn this in to My insurance as there is no damage to the vehicle except for the airbags. I have two parts cars, but both have grey interiors.

Thank's for any help.

Re: Sensitive Airbags deployed, what now?

I am happy to report that they are still available from Subaru however they are $TEXAS$ kind of expensive. It might be best to turn it in to insurance and have them fight the state for the repair money. I would also make sure you get a picture of the pothole for your records. I have to admit, in my many years of part sales this is certainly the first I have ever heard of a pothole setting off airbags. It's definitely unusual, must have been one heck of a pothole! I bet that would have scared the crap out of me!!!

These are discounted prices, not list. If you need an official quote for insurance I would be happy to send one to you.

Driver - 98211PA003DO - $790.00
Passenger - 98211PA030DO - $1195.00

Re: Sensitive Airbags deployed, what now?

OK Guys.. I have purchased a set of Airbags from a very helpful fellow owner.

So far I have received mixed advice about resetting or replacing the Control Module and sensors.

The Module is the same for 94-97 SVX's But I don't have a spare one.

HELP save My black beauty.. there is NO body damage all I need to do is replace the Bags and or sensors and controls.

Does anyone here KNOW the proper way to replace them?

Unfortunately, the dropbox manual only covers the driver's side airbag information for the 1992

There is a supplemental manual for the updated SRS that came out in 1994, including the passenger side airbag, but not available as part of this group.

Re: Sensitive Airbags deployed, what now?

At least the 1992 Service manual seems to suggest the control unit is a "use again" piece. The impact sensors I don't think so...the internal ball/inertia piece that gets jolted into deploy mode seems to be a one time unit.

Re: Sensitive Airbags deployed, what now?

Just an FYI - I haven't had much time to do this today at work so I will check it out when I get home!

Thanks,

Re: Sensitive Airbags deployed, what now?

Why not just take the parts into Subaru - let them do the work, it should only take a tech about 2 hours to replace....

Re: Sensitive Airbags deployed, what now?

The airbag is a one time use only once it blows it needs replaced.
The airbag control unit is a one time use only as well
The sensors are reusable and self resetting if they didn't get hit themselves and not cracked.

The Airbag control unit is up under the radio center console bolted to the floor in front of the shifter

The driver airbag is same as a legacy of the same era.
There are tamper proof torx screws with the center stub, and they are all really tight, they are factory installed with threadlock glue and are hard to come loose.

You need to unplug the battery and pull SRS fuses when working on this stuff, for at least 30 minutes prior to doing any work.

The connectors have special metal lock tabs and green slide locks to disconnect.

You NEED to make 100% sure the control unit you are going to buy was from a car that the airbags were 100% intact.

If an airbag blows, it can also damage the roll connector for the steering column and it would possibly need replaced.

Re: Sensitive Airbags deployed, what now?

Ok, I have looked to the end of the internet and can not seem to find the supplement for the dual airbags. I haven't completely given up yet but so far, it doesn't seem to be on the STIS system. The search functions do not work well for older vehicles so I have been going through the individual .pdf files looking for it.

Does anyone have access to an automated sheet scanner? The needed manual is on ebay now and a scan would be good for everyone. We are willing to buy then ship the manual if someone else can scan it.
