Exclamation New WRX STi exceeds SVX as highest HP Subaru sold in USA

Here's the link

http://impreza.subaru.com/microsites...sti/wrxsti.jsp

Specs show a turbocharged 2.5 (!) with 300hp/300 ft. lbs of torque!!!

Just passing it along.

Wow...

Have I been reading the wrong magazines? I thought the STI was going to be about 260 hp......where did 300 come from? Is this a surprise designed to do the EVO one better?

This does a leap-frog over the 350Z and G35 coupe.....Don

i told you all that Subaru said the STi would outdo the EVO! this will be my next car, hopefully after the SVX gives me many years of minimum trouble service.
i love the looks and comfort of the SVX, but the wife's WRX is just TOO much fun to drive. with 75 more hp and Sportshift........

Thumbs up New STI

This car will be available in europe in first quarter of 2003.

I love the new styling!

If I had the money this would be my third car.
Great Performance and WOW what a beast to drive (I once was co-driver in an STI)!

I love the newly designed headlights. They look tons better! I dunno about that spoiler! From what I've read of the interior, it does not seem at all lavish. That's too bad. Looks like they've built this thing purely for performance, not comfort.

300 hp on 4 cyl 2.5 liter? I take it the engine will be loud and obnoxious? Looks like they got the extra hp by elliminating some weight.

I'd be hard pressed to decide between the SVX or the WRX sti. However, my days of reckless abandonment are long gone, so I'd stick with the SVX. I don't need to cruise around town on my way to work like i'm a rally driver. I'd take luxury (with power) anyday.

whaaaaaaa????????

WRX's and STi's have always adhered to a maximum 2.0 liter displacement, except in the case of the 22B and the new Tommy Kaira WRX. The reason for this is because the WRC delegates 2 liters as the maximum displacement allowed in competition........ I always thought that was a kinda cool reason to keep the motors so small.. Don't get me wrong, it's true that there's no replacement for displacement, and a 2.5 liter four is relatively big.. I guess the larger displacement should eliminate a lot of the lag at the low end.. but still..

ah $*% it, lemme go get the 30 grand I've been keeping in a shoebox under my bed..

It says this summer, North America. Do you believe it?

With a driver controled water spray for the inter-cooler.

With a driver controled adjustable RWD up to 65% power to the rear wheels.

Break away foot pedals.

Insurance cost?

I have a rather low insurance rate since I am 48.

Any of you you rich younger people want to buy me the car?
I only want to drive it on weekends. The rest of the time it's yours. Until you crash it.

Actually, you are incorrect.

The 2.0L limit for WRC has absolutely nothing to do with the size of the motor sold in the street car.

The WRX has always been 2.0L because vehicles over that displacement are taxed at a MUCH higher rate in Japan. Thus, the adherence to 2.0L for all the rally specials built on economy style frames. The supercars like the NSX, Supra, etc. are designed to be luxury cars and come at a premium price so the tax differential is less of an issue.

WRC rules only require 50 examples of the vehicle to be sold using the same displacement motor. There are no regulations about what a manufacturer can and cannot build outside of that.

The US market is the first large market target outside of the Japanese 2.0L limit, so we were the first to justify the economic cost of a new motor design to increase performance.

I am certain we will see this motor released in Europe within the year. The UK boys are already clamoring for it.
