Question Strut Options

My baby is gonna need some new struts soon, the back right is starting to leak. I'm curious as to what types of options are available right now. The Koni's are no longer available, and are expensive(atleast more than oem) correct? Are there any other options besides oem (cheaper)? I checked subaruparts.com and they have two different things for "complete strut" listed:
01 $79.97 Strut complete (rear) right hand 2x-
$193.90 Strut complete (rear) right hand -29
What is the difference? I don't think I can do them on my own, any idea on a price to have them installed? I'd really like to get all 4 done, but I probably only have enough for the rear for now. Thanks for the help.

P.S. Anyone who has done struts before is more welcome to install them for me

Not many choices

I can't help with the Subaru part numbers and prices, but the Konis will be more expensive than the stock struts. There are currently no other choices, though Porter said he was working on something awhile back.

Some of the Japanese sites show a listing for an Aragosta coilover kit. I contacted Aragosta here in the states and they:

1) knew nothing about the application

2) never returned my calls after taking my info and telliong me they'd check it out.

The Aragosta struts were a short batch run of struts simply for FLATT Racing in Japan. They are no longer produced, but FLATT still has them in stock.

Mike

PS-- Dont try calling Aragosta in the states... they are very rude and not helpful at all.

I've had this site bookmarked for a while now. Until I can get enough money to liberate some of these things. Give 'em a call,

You could go with SHOWA, I know of someone who paid close to $1,000 to buy these, but you could get the same ones from the dealer

As Chris said, the stock struts are made by SHOWA, a respected name in suspension in Japan.

Alan- There is no difference in the suspension for 97. My guess is they dont have physical confirmation of the fit on the 97, so they dont say it WILL fit. But i would bet my clear headlight lenses that they will.

Its really not that hard to replace the rear struts you have a garage where you can do the work. You'll have to put the car on jackstands to do it. As long as the bolts securing the strut to the knuckle are not seized from rust, replacing the rear struts is pretty easy. Two bolts securing the strut to the knuckle, three nuts securing the strut to the chassis, and one bolt securing the brake line to the strut. Seized or not, you'll need a good size breaker bar to loosen the bolts attaching the strut to the knuckle. Oh, and you have to disassemble the rear of the interior of your SVX to get to the strut-to-chassis bolts. (They're under the rear deck panel.) That's not hard though either if you're patient. Probably the most difficult part would be pulling the spring off the old strut and mounting it on the new strut. You'll need some sort of tool to compress the spring. I used two pieces of nylon rope (on opposing sides of the spring) and two bars (tightened the rope by twisting the rope around using the bar). Worked perfectly. The spring replacement job is best accomplished with the help of a friend. When you put the new struts on the car, make sure you put them on the correct side of the car. :-)

If that sounds like its out of you're realm, then call your local mech and ask for a quote on strut replacement for an SVX.

I have done 10 strut replacements. Piece of cake if you got the right tools.

Check your rear strut mounts before you get parts. They may be rusting away. You may also want the upper stut mount/bearing for the fronts. You may also want to replace the spring rubber if the mating part has rusted real bad.

I think someone said something about Legacy/ Impreza struts going on SVX spindals, just that the SVX spindals were just a little thicker but the bolt spreads were the same. If so you could just have the spindals shaved down to fit. There are a lot more strut options for Legacy/ Imprezas. Has anyone tried to see if this would work yet.

Thats weird. You think KYB or Gabriel etc etc would jump at the chance to make struts for our cars; they could undercut the factory price and give us a better strut.

Significant Technical Input
Maremont/Gabriel does make struts for the SVX. They're just too dang expensive (last I checked about $157 ea.) for what they are. The factory struts are the best value so far.
