That said, some owners have said the 4WS model corners flatter. I have seen Phil & Belha's in action, and it corners well.

The only components pictures I know of are these on Jamsvx site:

Hey, I looked in your locker! Is that white car really 22,000 miles??

And if so, how is the underneath so rusty? Did it do its miles in a hilly snowy salt area?

Looks cool anyway. Lucky dog.

Cool.

It should be straightforward to clean up. All body components are galvanised. Only bolt-on metal is rust-prone.

Same as you, I would love to see pictures. Maybe Phil or Darren would put one of their cars up on a ramp and oblige?

Many years ago, when JamSVX was the only true believer , I promised him some photos as proof - and I still haven't got around to taking them.

However, svx_james has a picture in his locker.

Preston,

The JDM SVX rear wheel steering used a modified version of the Nissan Hi-Caste (spelling?) system.

Hi Larry,

Happy New Year to you and to the Beautiful Navi-guesser.

That is very interesting. Something I did not know.

The 300ZX would be similar to the SVX in size and in many ways, but a good bit faster in turbo form.

From what I know the Nissan system is called Hi-Cas, and I thought it was passive, not active.

Do you mean they used the Hi-Cas geometry, and added the motor and computer?

Or am I not fully informed, does Nissan have a motorised and active version of the Hi-Cas rear axle?

Joe

I believe it is based on a Mitsubishi system not a Nissan one.

Nissan's HICAS is a hydraulic 4WS system while their Super HICAS uses an electronic actuator to move the rear steering rack. Super HICAS initially steers the rear wheels in the opposite direction to the front and then changes to the same direction.

Thanks Paddles, now a while since we met.

I was hoping you would chime in here. This network has everything, even a Kiwi fluent in Japanese.

I have some text in Japanese writing describing the system, which I believe was copied off a web site 6/7 years back. It includes several illustrations and you may know of it. It would appear to constitute an advertising screed so may not include much technical data.

A local guy who I have lost touch with, sorted out trouble he had with the electronics in his own 4WS SVX and I have some info. You are correct in that all indicates a Mitsibishi system. The actuating electric motor is a Mitsibishi Electric Type 4WS - 88141PA000. The controller mounted in the boot/trunk, is a Mitsibishi Electric Type 4WS - 88121PA00 and switches the motor via a 45 amp rated FET which is stall current protected. N.B. The controller is permanently activated and therefore a fault could result in a flat battery.

Cheers, Trevor.

I don't know if that chap Nathan ever bought that car.

That was last July, and he has not posted since.

That black car looks real sweet, and has very low mileage, doesn't it?

Thought this thread was about dead, but it lives on. Wondering - is AWS a feature incorporated into F-1 racing, and if not, why not? Its been around long enough that some major racing manufacturer should have used it, IF it truly gets you around a twisty course at a higher rate of speed. As for the rear wheels first turning opposite the fronts, then turning with them, I must wonder how that affects handling while flat out near the apex of a hairpin turn. White knuckles, no doubt. Anyway, when someone gives me a clue regarding my racing application question, I'll have learned enough about AWS to last the rest of my life. Thanks.

The very high torque loads would make application very difficult, if not impossible. In any event the driver has enough variables to cope with as it is and I am sure rear wheel steering would not be welcome.

Some really high tech and amazing rear wheel steering type geometry can be seen in truck and trailer rigs. These are interesting to watch tracking round a roundabout.

Those four new tires; the fronts are exhibiting wear signs on the outers, (after 35K) while the rears look just fine. I am swapping them end-for-end to prolong the life...and we shall see how they continue to wear...but any info on geometry settings would be great to have...to check all is A-OK.
