I had the front plate mounted version for about 6 years, no thefts, and only had to replace it once due to battery life...

I have the license plate mount for years. I replaced 2 of them so far.

One... I live in chicago. I get hit a lot on the bumper. You crack them, and water goes in and you are dead.

Two.... Make sure they are taking off the right amount. There were a few months I wondered what happened to my credit card bill... They were charging me at a 18 wheeler semi rate. Check your credit card often.

This sounds interesting. Anyone else tried it?

I tried holding mine out the side window, but it's too much off center. ( the scanners here are in the center of the lane) Currently I just hold it up to the opened sun roof.

I suppose if it does work on the rear window you'd have to make sure you don't drive through too fast. Don't want to hit the arm before it raises.

Oh.

So this thread would explain how I almost wiped out a toll gate tonight on the way back from Jersey.

The only problem I came across with the outside EZPASS was the cold snow/ice storms. It would freeze and wouldn't work. I carry a regular spare in the glove compartment (in a special foiled wraping to prevent scanning) until I need it.

From what I understand the external licence plate mounted ones get stolen and used. Its easier to just do the pretend to throw money and honk manuver, but I didnt mention that.

I for one, would love to find out what the right answer is here.

Maybe the ez-pass folks are racists - the exterior tags (the black ones) seem to be made of some material that is much less durable than the inside (white) ones. I have gone through 6 of them in the last few years. Parking damage, battery life, sometimes they just crack from the cold...

I tried both types on the rear-deck and inside the trunk (you do know it's plastic - I have a GPS and Sat radio antenna in the trunk lid that work fine). Sometimes these work, sometimes not. I always thought it was just too far back for the booth antenna to get it.

For now, the sunroof is the way to go. Really annoying.

When I lived in Chicago, my Ipass would crack. I found out why? Parking. The idiots in the city don't know how to park. Now I carry it in my car. When I need it, I roll down the window and flash. If it reads fine. If not, I'll get a bill and we'll take care of it then.

my external E-Z pass is MIA someplace in my house or one of the three cars
someone backed into it its like $29 to replace it lost stolen broken whatever

If you dont have the E-Z pass on the windshield or on the license plate you can get a summons in NY I couldnt find the link though

"Violators are customers who pass through lanes without an tag, or could be customers who do not have their tag properly mounted or account information up to date. "

I know to piss my old boss off I got him a ticket for not having his properly mounted

What happens when you go thru without a EZ pass and don't even own one? Just was wondering because I had no dollar bills! I was going thru tacony bridge. Then when I told the guy I had no money he said I had to turn right down this street and pretty much get money. Then I went right down the street went back pulled over to some donut shop and then gave the guy my change. I think it was a bunch of BS myself but I found change buried underneath the seat of my Outback. I should have just went thru the bridge... Arg!

Another story: don't remember what bridge it was but it was funny as anything when we were heading to Vetrens stadium my friends mom just went like around I think were police cars park or something and nothing even happened. She did this because she knew someone who worked there. LOL shes a crazy one though...........
