cig lighter...constant or ignition?

Is the cigarette lighter a constant power source, or only operates with ignition?

I thought only while the ignition was ON, but it reads low voltage when off...

What's the deal here???

I think it's essentially off when the ignition is off. I know on many cars the lighter is powered no matter what, but this is not the case on any Subaru I've seen.

It's not surprising that you read a little voltage when the car is off - things like the clock and radio and ECU all draw a little to keep their memory and such. Plus the security system is running.

i think it is ignition too, my cell phone charger isn't lit when the car is off, meaning that the lighter wouldn't work either

I am a pessimistic optimistic. I think the worst is going to happen, that way when it does, i don't feel as bad, but if the best happens, i am twice as happy.

It's ignition.

If you want a constant on, you can tap in the power from the radio. Radio has a constant on power. Or do what I did, ran more wires through the firewall.

Yes it does that in a lot of cars. When the heating coil gets hot, it is expended and it will pop out telling the user that it's ready. However, the spring should not be that strong that it jump past you though.

the spring was strong enough to put it in my lap. i don't use it anymore, thanks. i should probably call my local ambulance-chasing attorney....."it scared me and i spillled hot coffee all over myself. i'll need $1 million for the pain and suffering!"
