trans fluid filter
I'm replacing the fluid filter from Subaru with a Perma Cool unit that has a spin on filter. Perma Cool kit cost 31.99 + 8.74 S&H from Jeg's in Ohio.

Guys,
does a 94 need another cooler? I know the 92/3 were a bit shakey (no offense)... but I heard that 94+ have been changed. Lwin

install tranny cooler
Mines not listed
I installed my cooler(s) in series with the oem tranny cooler One 19k gwv b&m in series after and one 19k gwv b&m in series before. I think I have the updated radiator, but I am not sure (former owner had the radiator replaced, I think, hopefully with a newer one) Having my temp sender unit after all the coolers, my temperatures never go past 163. My only worry is too much distance for atf to cover, and maybe the temperatures are actually too low for the tranny. I maybe remove the oem cooler from the loop to see what happens to the temps later in the summer.

plugging up
I know, however i think a have an updated radiator, I thiink....
Why two coolers? actually the second one was supposed to be for my oil cooler( i do some autocross, so the stress is higher) Unfortunately, I didnt research the idea very througly and could not find a path to put the cooler for the engine oil. My plan was to put each cooler on either side in front of the condensor for a perfect fit and match. What to do with the second cooler? I was thinking of selling it on this board, but I ended up using some of the fittings from the second cooler to create a custom fitting for the temperature sender. The reason I put it in series was mostly because it is easier, I didnt have the parts for parallel and I was sure it would pump anything to the cooler in front of the condensor because of the varying in height. Instead I mounted the second one parallel to the ground in front of the oil pan. and the first in front of the condensor. Of course this wrecks havac on how much atf I need int he system. WHen the car hasnt started up, it looks way over ful, but when i start the car and it starts pumping it goes to the correct height on the dipstick.

I'm waiting for an answer to Seraphims question. Does a '94, or newer, need a filter/cooler?
I had my ATF pumped out and refilled at 100,000 miles, and the tech said everything looked great. (Granted, my autocross days were over in the 80's.) Steve

cooler in front of condenser
Any precautions regarding the condenser to install a cooler in front of it?

yes, considering the previous owner replaced the radiator in 1999
but had to fix the tranny in 2000, i'd rather install a 100 dollar part rather than pay the 4500 for a new tranny

I have mine installed after the radiatior and in front of the a/c condenser. The temperature out the trans drops about 30F, 15F in each one. The thermometers are attached to the outside of the metal trans lines and wrapped with foam insulation.
At first I had it in between the condenser and the radiator and by-passed the radiator all together. This got way to hot on hot days very fast! I have also installed a diverter valve to bypass the cooler in the winter. Now all I have to do is get the AWD system to work and find out where to put the "secret hole" in that hydraulic control valve thing and the car will be in great shape. |
