The racer is almost a 5-speed

Over the past week, Ben has been slowly removing parts of the racer to prepare for the trans swap. Yesterday, I took the trans and all of Tom's swap pieces down to swap it in. The old auto came out real easy?? After a small issue with the flywheel bearing, everything started to go together.

By the time we had to stop working, the transmission and cross member were in and the linkage was all bolted up. Tom's kit is great, definitely makes the swap easier than doing the fab work yourself.

Still left to do;
- 1/2 the wiring
- route the clutch cable
- install the pedals
- rest of re-install (drive shaft, exhaust, axles....)

I should be getting down there again next week to help finish everything.

Tom

Tom don't worry about it. Dave found an outback with one in it that will fit with just the front end collar trimming. I think he's getting ya some rear ends too while he's there.

About 2750 with a full tank of gas and ready to run. We've lightened it a bit more since but the cage will wash any gains from going to a 5 speed. Stock 92 weighed in at 3700 on the same scale.

Again, I can't say enough about Tom's x member. It was less than an 1/8 of an inch off from lining up on the racer. That is amazing fit and finish for a kit that isn't made via a computer. A quick 16 oz digital calibration aparatus lined the last bolt hole up perfectly. Only hiccups we've hit so far is I seem to have broken a computer chip/relay from under the dash, the pilot bearing was seized. Glad I checked it before installing it and the annoying fact that we're working in a 9.5x19 garage that has a spare engine in it, 6 tires lying around, boxes of motorcycle parts and all my tools.

Our guess is she should be capable of a 13.8 second 1/4 mile if we find a pilot (NOT BILL) willing and capable of a decent launch at Reading. She's already done a 14.2 with 4.11 gearing at 75ish degrees. Running with our special 4.39 gears, 100 or so less lbs and a 5 should be more than enough to put it into the 13s.

How exactly do you get 4.39 gears? and is that 2750 with the cage?

Cage still isn't in. The 4.39 is calculated with the 4.11 and our 20" tires.

Cage still isn't in but my guess now on weight would be in the mid 2600 range with a 5 speed. The cage weighs about 150 in pieces so a sub 2800 weight wet should be about right.

Nice! Now, why will it only have 4 speeds?

Come on now, don't you want to know what it will do sideways in the quarter?

I wil pilot that bad boy if you want... I still need to learn my 6spd s/c launch for now too though. Should be fun. I already told Dave, I should keep at least 1 5mt shaft on hadn so I am still gonna get one made... If you guys need it, its yours

Well it's only been 2 weeks.... ooops, I mean a YEAR and two weeks... Some of those at Reading last year may recall that we had some issues with the clutch not releasing... Tuesday I took the racer down to visit Uncle Tom at All Wheel Drive. I think we may have found the problem;

Ben is taking this to mean that we are making somewhere north of 500 crank hp to be able to crack the pressure plate like that????

While it was there I worked at tightening the exhaust up to the chassis, as the car is somewhat lower than stock, we've had some scraping issues, especially when going on and off the trailer. I had to trim the rear bumper cover a little more, but I probably now have the exhaust 1/2" to 1" higher than it was. Half an inch may not seem like a big deal, but it eliminates having to drive the truck onto ramps to make the transitions onto the trailer smoother.

Tom's Dad stopped by and wondered why I was advertising for someone else's 5 speed kit on the rear bumper, we had to explain that "SVXSpeedshop" was Tom before All Wheel Drive was opened...

Tom also helped us out by doing some welding on the cage;

With the welding that he did, the cage is 90% done. We still need to make a bracket to support the rear of the seat and then paint it.

Much thanks to Tom, Eric and Mike at AWD. A great shop and some great guys. While there I also got to watch Tom working on his intakes and adapting the new design to eliminate dead spots. Also I was able to get covered with dust from Eric working on his front lip.

500 crank?

How about "we heated that sucker up so badly that all of the stress cracks joined"

Seriously, I'm glad to hear it's coming back together! I need to get the name of the place you got the cage kit from so I can order one up for the SVreX II.

Are you going to autoX it at all this year?

I still have the business card in my wallet, www.autoweldchassis.com don't hold the website against them
