electrical questions after 5spd swap
Hello all!
Im new here! At first, sorry for my bad english, but i will try my best . I have done a 5spd swap in a SVX. I have taken a 1992 Legacy Turbo transmission. Now, all its done but i have problems with the electric: 1. I need the cables for the speed sensor. and the reverse light. Does anyone have an idea, which cables (or cable colours) on the 2 SVX transmission connectors and on the legacy transmission are used for the speed sensor and reverse light? 2. After 5spd swap, the CHECK ENGINE lamp illuminated. How can I disable the transmission failure? The Legacy Turbo transmission has 2 connectors. A 3pin connector on the side of the transmission and a 6 pin connector on the top of the transmission, where only 4 pins are used. Whats the function of these cables at all? (disable/enable AWD? ) Hope you can help me Thank You in advance! Greetings |

Re: electrical questions after 5spd swap
1. I'm not sure of the differences in transmissions between countries so I'll give the answer for US transmissions, if it doesn't help hopefully some of the europeans will chime in.
1. For the speed sensor, on the SVX transmission a 3 wire speed sensor threads into a spot ofn the front differential right next to the diff dip stick. On the Legacy trans the mecahanica speedo cable threads into the body of the trans about half way back. Unscrew the collor holding the speedo cable from the legacy trans and unscrew the electronic speed sensor from the SVX trans. The Electronic speed sensor will then thread into the Leg trans. You will need to splice in about a foot of extra wire in the 3 conductors of the SVX speed sensor wiring harness since the sensor will now be sitting back a little further. The wiring harness's on the Leg trans sound different than ours, you'll have to use a multimeter to check resistance across various connectors while to find a pair that are closed when in R and open when in any other gear.

Re: electrical questions after 5spd swap
Hello,
thank you for the instructions! Now i installed the reverse light switch and removed the speed sensor from the automatic , ready to install it in the leggy trans. But I have another question. I installed the ECU but not the TCU. When we started the car the first time, we had problems with the neutral safety switch. So we connected the ingnition cable directly to the starter. Now, the car is working good, but when we try to start the engine, when its cold, the starting time is 2 minutes and more. Also the cooling ventilators are permanently on, when i start the car. Is it an electrical problem? Thank You |

Re: electrical questions after 5spd swap
Ideally you want to jump the inhibitor switch circuit to the clutch switch on the pedals. This way you can only engage the starter when you depress the clutch. This and it also does not keep the ECU in the "Neutral" map. Technically the maps are supposed to be the same but I always felt the car would run better if it was not wired to start all the time.
What do you mean by cooling ventilators?? Tom |

Re: electrical questions after 5spd swap
Hi,
the cooler fans are always on, although the engine is cold. |

Re: electrical questions after 5spd swap
Hi,
no all off. Is the engine fan connected with the auto trans ? (because in the water cooler is a separate oil cooler). Greetings |

Re: electrical questions after 5spd swap
no, the auto trans has nothing to do with the engine cooling system... I would imagine that your relay(s) is/are stuck open... Gotta find out why the circuit is powered when it shouldn't be

Re: electrical questions after 5spd swap
Did you get the speed sensor issue fixed?
The fans do get a control from the speed sensor and will run constantly if it is not connected or operating properly.

Because the fans are routed through the Legacy body wiring, not the SVX body Wiring...would be my guess..
