ticket time

The wife took a trip down to the beach and got tagged for 68 in a 55 in New Bern, NC (Craven County). It was in an area where the speed limit dropped from 70 to 55 and she didn't notice. It's about 4hrs from where we live in Greensboro.

Anyway, it's her 2nd ticket. Her last ticket was in 1992 in Raleigh, NC. My question: Should I just pay the ticket ($140) or pay a laywer $335 to get it dropped to improper equipment? In the latter case, there would be no points assigned to her license.

What's the insurance hit for the speeding ticket? If you'll end up saving money by not hiking your insurance, I'd go for it.

Not sure how it works in NC, but in PA, you can usually get a drop in charges just by going and fighting it on your own. Don't try to argue it out, just explain that you'd like to avoid the points and they will usually help you out.

Of course i can only speak of how it has worked here in the Maryland traffic courts for me. Every ticket i've had i've gone in to court minus a lawyer, pleaded guilty and normally just paid court cost, fines or both. No points at all. Since her last ticket was in 1992 the judge normally looks at the clean driving record and will try to keep it that way. I personally see no need for a lawyer unless it was more serious like DUI or DWI and man i don't want to go there......Just my .02

Do you have the driving school option? In Florida you can take a $20.00 - 4 hour long driving school in the evening and no points will be assigned. They also deduct the $20.00 from the fine. You can take that option once a year.

Call the Officer or Trooper and explain that you fully realize you were wrong and are very sorry, but would like to know if you can please ammend the citation so there are no points. I have done this for people many times. It all goes back to their demeanor during the intial stop. Of course 13 over is petty on any limited control highway in the first place, so that might be an indication of your chances of having it ammended.

I don't know what the impact to the insurance would be. I'm afraid to call because then they might actually look into it. I'd like to go and fight it but the 4hr drive is a real deterrent. The way my luck goes, I'd get there and they'd postpone it another day and I can't afford to miss that much work.

I like the driving school option but haven't been able to find anything about it here in NC.

I'll look into calling the officer tomorrow.

Thanks for all of the help.

Greg
