Exclamation Won't shift past 2nd gear...

I'm looking at a '92 lsl, and am trying to figure out what might be wrong with it...without actually being able to see it myself

Apparently, the guy bought the car and drove it home apprx 200 miles. Drove around for a week etc and one day it wouldn't shift into any gear past 2nd. Any ideas? My car is getting its tranny swapped to a 4.44 now that the front diff. is out, so if the tranny is the probem...at least I already have one.

Any chance this is just a tps problem or something? Reverse works fine, no other clunking etc sounds.

Forgot to mention...

He says it looks like the tranny is much cleaner than everything around it, so maybe it was switched out or rebuilt? Wierd if it went bad already...

Try adjusting the brake band. Just read another post where the guys said had the same issue and said things got better after adjusting the brake band.

Classic SVX
Take it to a shop and ask them to have a quick look at it. Tell them that you're interested in buying and want an appraisal. I had a buick that i drove around in 1st gear for 2 months. turned out to be a 3 cent piece of vacuum hose. lmao!

If you are purchasing as is where is, sight unseen, you must discount it by the cost of a transmission overhaul. If it is something less expensive, as it very well could be, you are on a win.

Mine!

Well, I bought it...at a very good price. Now it's just a matter of picking it up on Tuesday, and figuring out what's wrong. Would improper brake band adjustment cause it to not go into the next gear? It isnt' slipping out of gear, just won't go into 3rd and up

I guess I'll just have to check for codes when I get it in the garage.

Now I have two non-working SVXi! Lol hopefully mine will be fixed soon...I miss it. I'm driving my father's Stealth, and it's nowhere near as comfortable or even fun to drive, believe it or not! I used to love that car...now I have experienced better
