When you replaced the front diff, is that all you replaced. Did you replace the pinion in the transmission too? If the front diff is in fact a SVX that it will operate with no problems. If you have a Legacy front diff and did not replace the pinion I do not think that the front diff would even go on. Legacy's were either 4.44 or 4.11. The 3.55 is special to the SVX. (If I am wrong someone correct me)

This alone should eliminate the front diff as a problem. Who did you get the front diff from and did they pull it off a SVX? Did you swap gears in the front diff or the whole thing?

Just trying to think of odd things as to what would cause the rear to bind and burn up?

Steve

svx-ff We bought the front diff from a member who first sent the case only and then later sent the gears because the gears were damaged on the original diff. My transmission shop assured me they matched up perfectly.
I am trying to contact him to find out exactly what make and model the front diff came from.

Lightbulb Just thought of this

Did you replace the carrier bearing on the rear drive shaft ofter the fire, 1st one.

It that is slowing the rear shaft down would it cause the rear to overheat?

Just talked with the member that sold me the front diff and he say's the front diff is from a 1992 SVX-LSL and that it is the same for all models of AWD.
Can anyone verify this???

I don't think the rear carrier bearing was replaced.

Yes, AND I can vouch for the person you bought it from!
He knows what he is doing!

Does the front diff have serial numbers to ID with.
Do I have to disassemble the front diff to determine what gear ratio it is?

It's from his original transmission.

The # is on the bell housing, or front differential.
To count the teeth, you would have to dissassemble it.
I do not know of any other way to see the teeth.

The problem is not with the front diff or the trans.

I really think that if an incorrect front diff was installed, it would burn up the trans and not the rear diff. The transmission's center differential is really the weakest point in the setup.

I don't think the front diff is the problem either. However I'm going to have to eliminate it first so the dealer can't hold it over my head like they did with the wrong transmission excuse.

It's no wonder customers have lost confidence in dealer service.

Subaru has attempted to build it's image on superior handling vehicles but unfortunately they seem to lack the persistence to diagnose and correct their own engineering shortcomings.

I've gotten more advice and answers from this web site and from local independant garages than from Subaru and it's dealers.

Their solution is to just keep replacing parts until it fixes itself.
