Best way to keep this from happening is keep the oil clean and full. Too many SVXs are rolling oil slicks, easy to let the oil get low. I'm no fan of the 3,000 mile oil change....a waste of money IMO....but don't let it get too dirty.

My engine has over 140k and the internals look beautiful, best looking engine I've ever torn apart. The outside, on the other hand, looked like a total disaster. It's cleaned up now but what a chore that was.

Anyway, problems with piston clearance and bad rod bearings have a much deeper knocking sound and will usually increase in volume as rpms increase. Lifter/valvtrain tick is a much sharper sound and usually gets drowned out by engine noise as rpms increase.

My recommendation to budfreak is to take care of the problem sooner rather than later. I've torn into two seized engines (not mine) caused by failed bearings. Neither was pretty or cheap to fix. One was a low rpm seizure, not too bad but the other was a high rpm seizure. That one pretty much destroyed the entire engine. Actually, the oil filter spun loose (DSM curse) and all the oil was forced out. Was impressed by the ARP rod bolts we put in that engine. They didn't break but they were bent and a few were actually torn out of the rods.

both svxfiles and myself experienced rather strange engine destruction. I had my #5 cylinder keep filling with oil (I mean a lot of oil). Enough that it would leak out of the gaps in my exhaust Fowled plugs...etc. I think it was a guide that went because I fully disassembled the engine to find absolutely nothing wrong with the bottom end and the HG was still good. Bill did find a crack in the head but it was the driver's side head so wrong side Never figured it out, I am hoping Tom will be able to tell us more after he pulls his motor apart

Bg

I always put BG MOA in with every oil change. It doesnt make oil thicker like every other additive it reduces friction.
