1997 Svx
Hello All!
Previously owned a 1995 SVX New for 2 weeks and it was stolen and trashed. Long time Subie owner with the best (other than the SVX) being a 1996 RX Turbo AWD Sedan. No other vehicle excels in foul weather like a subie. Anyway, now my finances allow me to pursue purchase of a 1997 SVX to replace the stolen one from 11 years ago. The one I am looking at is a very rare and quality example (and expensive). can any of you offer advice prior to my purchase? Any help is welcome |

Uh, check the engine and tranny levels and see how they smell. Regular car buying tips applied.

Brand new 1995 and stolen in 2 weeks?? Ahhhh...mannnn.... My sympathies!!
Definitely do a carfax on the 97 to assure it's not one of the recent flood cars. Use a flashlight and visually check the floor for any flood evidence. While the 97 is still cold, reach and feel the top of the engine undercover for pooled oil/fluids leaking from inside the timing belt cover. Try to reach in behind the fans and feel across the bottom of the timing belt cover if possible. Check tranny well. Drive the car until fully warmed up, and check for TC lockup on the interstate. Pull the transmission fault codes from the help files on this site and perform a test for trouble codes after driving/warm-up Test driver's side master window switch to assure auto-down works. I think only the 92's had the "auto-up" feature. Someone correct me if this is wrong. Look at moulding around sunroof for any evidence of leaking. Check trunk next to power antenna for any evidence of drain tubes leaking. Assure antenna extends fully. Take someone with you, put the 97 on gravel and LIGHTLY punch it to assure AWD is grabbing. Don't mess up your paint by overdoing this. After complete warm up, open hood and check for PS leaks/smoke. May be an idea to check this after warm up at red light traffic. Observe if smoke is coming from wheelwells. (Tagging other members to take over in the ring. )

Oh yeah, check the top of the radiator to assure the plastic top isn't cracked.
