Winter Gas Mileage

Winter Time Highway and Local Gas Mileage

I had the opportunity to check the SVX gas mileage during a Vermont trip this weekend.
The SVX got 27 mpg on the way up and the way back at 69mph That’s 270 miles each way with an air temperature of about -8 to 15 deg F.

The local travel was mostly in the -10 to 8 degree F range. I drove about 107 miles and obtained a whopping 15 mpg on short trips of 20 minutes or less and about 8 really really cold engine starts with 10 minute engine warm-ups.

I like the Conti-extreme contact tires in snow. They are good in the rain too and I sometimes wonder if there are tires on the car when I’m just cruising on dry roads.

Any tips on such a great MPG? On long trips the most I've ever had was 23 - 24 MPG, and that was about 250 miles, at 90 mph average, with 91 octane from 76 Gas Station in heavy rain with 50 - 60 F.

Local trips right now at about 19 - 20MPG, that is traveling 20 miles a day.

My gas mileage is really sucking right now because I am not driving but about 3 miles each way... I think my needle is on "E" right now and I've got about 23o on the trip meter... Probably can get about another 40 miles outta it before the light comes on...

I'm also keeping a Gas mileage Excel Spreadsheet... I think it should last for about a year... I can track my mileage for the upcoming year then post it...

I think that sounds about right for an average speed of 90 mph.

I think you can get better mileage if you slow down. Oh to live in California or any place out west with wide open non-patroled roads. I would not want to get out of the SVX.

Historically, the faster I drive the better the gas mileage. Penny has been known to get 30 - 31 hwy at speeds of 70+

Right now in the cold (the really cold) and traveling just in town, I'd say it's more like 20.

90 mph average, is very rare for me, so I just had to do it. It was on hw 5, a super straight highway without any boundaries or barriers. Why not speed a bit.

Ok, back to reality here, even averaging at about 70, I still don’t get a very good mileage. May be because it is California? I do keep a mileage log as well, will compile it together and see what I get eventually.

Best mileage ever was going 90 average for 350 miles without a fil up.

Worst was in December when I got 135 miles out of a full tank to the gas light being on. I was in a huge amount of snow, so there was a reasonable explaination, but it still sucks.

I don't know how you guys get these numbers. The best I've EVER recieved was 24.5. I think you're not calculating the numbers correctly, or filling it up strangely.... because even subaru never listed the car above 29mpg. Anyway, in city winter driving, I usually get around 16-20mpg. Highway maybe like 22. In the summer it doesn't really go up much... 24.5 max.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but...

You've got more tickets, AND points than 99.9% of the people on this list, and yet you question someone's ability to successfully figure out their mileage because it's not a good as yours. I could easily see 25-30 MPG driving under the right conditions at a reasonable speed. The EPA test is very specific and "YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY"

My gas milage to Syracuse, NY & back usually runs about 22 mpg. That is a 80-85 mph, on interstate highways and through a mountain range.

Cool

Once again folks - 3,500 mile summertime vacation trip two years ago, carefully noted by genuine Chinese calculator - 27.75 MPG.
Premium fuel only. Average highway speeds 65-80 mph.

Ron.

I think you guys must be overfilling your cars to achieve such stellar MPG.

Nearing the second thousand miles with my SVX and the mileage hasn't waivered...

"City:" 18+mpg (24 mile commute on very hilly 2-lane, typical small-town stop & go)

Highway: 25+ (average speed 75-80 mph, generally rolling terrain)

Still loving this car.
