brake band adjustment

My hands are too f*ck*ng big to do this. My 17mm wrench is too big. My patience is at it's end. My guys down at the local '76 station won't touch it; the dealer wants $175; AAMCO wants close to that. I've removed the box that attaches to the throttle bodies, disconnected the heater line, and am about to remove the starter. All this on a tranny with less than 20k miles. WTF?

$175!!?? WTH??

Tor, I had Subie Specialists in downtown Sac do mine a few weeks ago for an hour's labor. I looked it over in the manual and decided I wasn't meant to work blind with 2 tools while becoming very intimate with the motor. You may wanna hit Sears for a set of stubbies in the future. Hope it went well?

175 sounds about right for the dealer.

Visit Steve Barsotti at Barsotti's Auto Care up in Newcastle. Closer than downtown and he's a great guy, with tons of subs

400D Main St I think.

Steve's been good to me too! Only problem is last time I called in early Nov he was taking appointments for early January!! Who knows where that's at now!! Disconcerting to see his ad in the Bee the same day.
He's a one-man operation, a true Subie lover, but getting harder to get in to see. To his credit he really helped me out one evening when I was in a jam, coming back in to look at my car after hours so I could travel in her the next day, using a coilpack off a parts car and get this, not charging me!!
I've recommended him as well.

Yeah, I live literally 10 minutes from Barsotti's and have heard lots of good things about him as well. Forgot he was there, actually, as I've never actually gone to him . . . Guess I will now. Have to fly out of town tomorrow (today, as of right now), I'll give him a call when I get back.

Incidentally, I work for Tognotti's. Feel free to drop by around back in the tire shed Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday and say "hi" or something. Promise I won't use air on your rear wheels

Yeah, I saw your car; I waited almost 10 minutes before I left . . . no worries, though. How does my exhaust sound under load? All I've heard of it's from the inside if the car . . .

Oh, back to the band thing, I had to do some quick off-the-line movement to avoid being hit just before I got on the freeway; the RPMs jumped to about 4500, hung there, the car started moving a h*ll of a lot quicker than it rormally does off the line, then RPMs dropped to about 4000 and increased "normally". I was doing 45 (redline) by the time I reached the other end of the intersection. So maybe this brake band thing isn't too bad . . .

Nah, I'd rather not have to spend another $4k on another tranny in 2 months. I'll call Barsotti's on Thursday, when I get paid.

So, THAWA, if you stopped by to see me, I apologize for having to leave early. If not, well, cool, more business for the store

And your car looks better than mine. Time to wash it . . . mine, that is.

Just got back from a 70 mile drive, checked the fluid, and it was a little on the low side, so I topped it off. That probably explains the slippage in 1st, but not the missing of the gear on upshift. Looks like I still have to do the dreaded brake band adjustment. Hope my trannie's not toast now . . .should be fine I think, I may have taken 5,000 miles off the life of it by running around with low fluid for 4 days. Now I just have to find a leak . . .

A rock thrown by a tweaker who jumped me at 1 in the morning on a saturday hit my windshield. I'd have replaced it, but I can't seem to save up enough money before something else goes wrong with the car that requires my immediate attention. This week's problem: the fluid leak (whick is not coming from around the cooler area, that's the first place I checked). Next week: my LF axle. I just like the car too much to let it go, though, so I'll have to get used to this lifestyle . . .
