Spare Tire saftey?
Just a quick question, no formalites. I have the spare tire on my car right now, how safe would it be to drive on it for a couple of days, I cant take any chances if its "doable" but not good for the car, cause i really cant afford more repairs at the moment. Thanks!

I know this is a stupid question, but I have places to go today, and I need to know before I drive somewhere, or catch a ride with someone else.

If you have the stock tire size 225-50-16 then you should be ok to drive on it for a while, but try to limit it. how new are the tires on your car right now?
if you have an AWD put the spare on the front, if you have a fwd i doubt you'd be asking this.

Make sure it's got the right amount of air in it - first time I had to use mine, it about dropped to the rim when I lowered the car. I wouldn't advise any highway driving with it on - you should be okay for around town (i.e. I wouldn't go over 40-45 mph).

I would replace it asap. It is not the same as your regular tires. The spare if for limp along only, and I would use it as little as possible. I would rather be safe than sorry.

Thanks your all of your replys. Yes, the car is AWD, and yes, the spare is up front (but how would that be better than the back?) It is properly inflated, and I'd be keeping speeds down, but why put the AWD fuse in, i dont feel like burning out my AWD transfer clutch anymore than it already is...lol. again thanks for the replies, and keep'em coming, I like to be well educated

THe front differential in our cars is open, vs the back is a limited slip. this doesn't make much difference, but it does help limit wear a bit.
the fwd fuse doesn't add wear to the transfer clutch if you aren't spinning the tires.. however driving an SVX with a spare in the front with only the front wheels driving the car, it would be really hard to not spin them. I'm not quite sure what the advantage would be with the fwd fuse if the tires are very similar in size, and you don't drive it very much.

I don't know what the owner's manual says about this, but I'd keep the spare on the rear of an AWD car, with the fuse in place to hold it in FWD mode. That way you have your good rubber powering, steering and, by and large, stopping your car. And as someone else mentioned, the space-saver spare is intended for emergency use only. You shouldn't drive on it one mile more than absolutely necessary.

but seriously, fixing a tire takes about 20 minutes unless it has a hole in the sidewall. drive to a local tire and battery place, have them patch the tire from the inside. and put it back on yourself in the parking lot.. whole ordeal will take like 25 minutes
