Anyone having a rumble in between shifts and do you know what's causing it?

Is there any indication where the rumble may be coming from?
Is it reproduceable?
What kind of acceleration is required for the rumble to occur?

I used to get a noticable vibration (rumble) under hard acceleration shortly before the 2-3 upshift. I think the new tranny does it, too - but to be perfectly honest I've pretty much babied the car since I put that tranny in, for fear of breaking that one, too. Plus I haven't driven the car more than a couple miles in the past two months. So it might not.

I never did find out what the noise was, but I assume that in my case it was 'tranny trouble' of some kind.

Rumble location

It almost soundslike it's coming from the rear. It does it between 1st & 2nd and the from 3rd to 4th. It's louder between 1st & 2nd. It makes the noise after the car has warmed up. It's done it for a long time but no one has had an answer to what it could be. The AWD works fine (just tested it in the recent snow).

Does it do it under hard acceleration only or all the time?

I notice it under brisk acceleration. Under WOT it shifts good and firm and under light throttle, it's not noticed.

If I could spell out the sound it would be: wwaaammmpp. The shift is not lagging or sliding either. It just makes a wwaaammmppp sound.

It's been doing this for a few years. I don't beat on it. I hope it's not the brake bands. I had the trans rebuilt in 97 and have put 36,000 since. Fluid is clean and I change it often. I suppose they replaced the brake bands back then.

I won't be able to go to Reading this year but lets try to hook up on your way through Greensboro. I would love to see your car. I know Oakridge real well and go through there often when I'm on hwy 68.

Fell free to email me when you get close to leaving. paul@highpointchamber.org

back from the dead!

I'm getting this too. my tranny is about 10k miles old. A reman tranny was installed just before I got the car, so I don't think it's the brake bands.

I get this rumble between shifts, and it's more pronounced if I let off a little bit on the throttle just before a shift. for example: if I'm flying out of an exit ramp to merge with traffic, and someone hops into the lane in front of me and I have to let off a little at 5500 or so to stop accellerating. not let off all the way, just go down to 80% or so.

I suspect it's the "torque cut" feature that lets the tranny shift under less stress. I think it's the ECU cutting power to 3 or however many cylinders. I'd like some more opinions though. I don't get any sort of rumble at all under normal driving... just high RPMs, and just before a shift.

anyone?
