does YOUR DMV suck as bad as mine?

here in NS, when u goto register a newly acquired vehicle, their computer pops up a "book value" for your car and they will charge sales tax on that amount REGARDLESS OF HOW MUCH/LITTLE U PAID !!!

imagine my surpise to be told my svx was worth 1500$ in their eyes....

sheesh!!

i handed the girl the keys and she kinda looked at me to say "whats this?"

then i asked for a 1500$ cheque........!!!

i had to get a blank form, FIND an auto appraisal place to look at the car and pay THEM 30$ for the privilege!!
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR Rrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

now i have to go back to the dmv to pay the tax on the appraised value (200$$ )
lol

on the bright side, we pay 14 % tax here( dont get me started on THAT issue!!)

so instead of 210$ tax
i now have to pay 28 $
28+ the 30 for the appraisal+20$ for my time/gas= 78$$

so i'm still money ahead.......

but DAMN !!!
what a pita !!!

anyone else have this highway robbery system??

ps........

lets take a new car at 20,000$ for ex........here u will pay 2800$ in taxes to register it

keep it for a few yrs and sell it privatelyfor 10,000$.......
the new owner will now pay1400$
he sells it for 5000$...
the next owner pays 700$ in taxes........

he sells it for 1500$.....the gov makes another 210$

then it sells for 750$ a few times before getting scrapped.....thats another 105$ each time

so

the car lives sayyyyy 15 yrs.......
in that time, the thieves in my provincial government make.......

5320$$ off a car that sold for 20,000$ when new

quite a racket eh?!?!?!?

25% return on ONE consumer item in taxes....

I know what you mean.

I just paid $468.70 in taxes on my SVX two weeks ago. The purchase price was $6500.

The upshot is both trips to the DMV only took five minutes.

Georgia shows the taxable value of my cars to be something in the neighborhood of $700 each, as I recall. My annual registration (ad valorem tax plus decal fee) is about fifty bucks.

No state is going to base any vehicle's taxable value on what you paid.

Pennsylvania does If I show a bill of sale for $100, I pay $6 in taxes

And annual registration is a flat fee of $35 for cars.

Florida also, just write in on the title what you paid when you transfer it and pay the 6%. I didn't even have a receipt.

Wrong. If you buy a car and it is within a certain year range then yes you are correct but if it is newer you have to fill out a form about why you bought the car so cheap. IF THEY DO NOT LIKE YOUR ANSWER THEY WILL SEND YOU A BILL!!!!!! I can show you one of these bills if I still have it.

Case in point: a guy goes to Ill to get a turbo legacy with a blown tranny (auto) and tows it home. he fixes the tranny and gets the car licensed. He pays tax on $500 which is really what he paid. Later he gets a bill for $200 or so and has to send payment asap or provide proof of why he paid $500. He sent pics in of a car. Problem solved.

You guys have it pretty rough.

Over here there is really no fussing with anything, but be prepared to wait an hour or two in line.

When I bought the Stealth I don't think I even went to the DMV before I sold it.
Matter of fact, same for the XT6 and SVX. I never went to the DMV to transfer my name, though they were/are in my name.
My memory is fuzzy and I probably just forgot (because it was so simple), but I can count on one hand the number of times I've went there. All 5 times to get liscenced.
Permit at 14, m1 class at 16, D m1 at 18 (twice), and I just renewed at 24.

Had an MT Isuzu pickup on it's way South so I failed my first driving test. Tester guy didn't like me popping it in neutral coming to a stop.

Since you tend to buy new cars weekly, I'll concede to your knowledge here.

What are the taxes going to be on that XT-t???
