O/T - Fathers day, need advice

Ok, fathers day is coming up next week, and I need an advice on a present that I want to present to my dad.

Back in Kazakhstan, about 5 years ago, my dad and me used to go fishing all the time. It was something special, you wake up early in the morning, drive 200 miles out of town, in about 10 hours you find yourself stuck with your Subaru Leone Wagon (turbo), somewhere an hour away from the place. That is part of the fun, the second part is fishing itself. I am not going to go in details, it might take too long.

Anyway, now i am here in California. I want to relive the joy of fishing, and everything that goes with it. There is only one little problem, I have no idea where, and what to use and what kind of fish is there.

It has been 5 years ago, I last went out to the river to catch some fish. Five years ago we used a cheap carbon fiber fishing rods, or a bambook rods, about 7-10 feet. Today there are thousands of different types and kinds. I am totally lost. Need help.

So if anyone is interested in fishing here, or has gone, I am looking of all around fishing rod, and reel. (brand, type, value, e.t.c) Or if anyone has any good advice, would love to hear it.

thanks a lot

nik

Don't forget to buy a Loyal Turbo wagon for the trip.

Fishing

Proficient with a fly rod by chance? They're all pretty much the same. The difference is the more expensive ones get better gas mileage. Sounds like you'll blow your dad away! I'd just be concerned that I find a rod that'll fit into a tie box.

he he, nice.

Well, as I am looking to it, it a some kind of science to me. For example, when you are buying bikes, you don't just go in to WallMart and buy the least expencive, or the finest looking one. You have to do a research, ask people around, see what each bike is used for, what brand is better and long lasting, and you also have to know what are you planing on using this bike for.

Same here. I am looking for something, that my dad can use in any condition and any place, however, it should not be a WallMart brand, something valuable and not as high priced. It is kind of hard to find this perfection, however i know there is something like that.

Also, what kind of fish is the most common for an average lake?

nik

P.S. I am not looking for another subaru, he has one already.

Nik, I'm confused as usual. Is your dad here in California, or is he in Kazakhstan? I would be in the same boat as you. That is, I used to fish different styles (deep sea, river, bait casting) with my dad 50 years ago, but in adulthood, with a few trips on a "head boat" with rented tackle, I'd be challenged to figure out just what kind of hardware to purchase, given an unknown fish to catch.
I guess I'd go to sportfishing shop & ask what's needed to catch a particular type of fish, & hope dad likes what you buy for him.
Or....you could always buy him a bucket of worms!

Good luck - Ron.

No, my dad is here in CA. Sorry for such a confusing post, I was kind of going out in memories.

Anyway, thanks for advice, I might just do that. Actually I did that already. I first went to WallMart, then to Big 5. They both sell same kinds of fishing rods, and reels, except for Big 5 is just a bit more expencive. However, no one knows anything about fishing........ and which would be the best. I will just have to find another "sports" store, the real one.

thanks

nik
