Next meet how to: Timing belt change instructed by Huck - Donations accepted

Like Nubs said, this is one of the things a few svxers have done but most do not attempt. I know its within my ability to do it, but having never seen it done I'm scared to try. I'd pay for a lesson.

Unhappy Sucks, Huck

Sorry to hear of your troubles Huck.

I am the same with mine, much as I love it, I can never quite trust it not to break.

Hope it does not cost too much.

Joe

"Crap" is the perfect word

I'm staring down the same barrel as you are. At least as far as scheduling for it. Looks like if the radiator is removed there is plenty of room to work. I may try it. (I've done 3 other cars in the past with 2 transversed mounted motors & 1 regular.)

How are the grear drives & seals? Do you need to replace them as well? Good luck!

Don't fight the "love". You can't win. I'd be smarter to get rid of it as well but when it comes to this car, I don't make the smartest financial decisions.

Thanks for the positive comments guys,
I am Thankful that I can do it myself, as there is NO WAY I could own a SVX if I had to pay somebody to keep it running , I can't even figure where I'm going to get the money for the parts It may have to sit untill I get some more funds

It sucks that I could have it back on the road in a day, if I had the parts, but it'll probably be sidelined for most of the summer (when I really want to drive it)

Gonna check around for better prices, hope I run into some good deals.

I've got a Legacy 2.2 parts engine, but the idlers aren't as wide as on the 3.3, the 3.3 t-belt is about a 1/4" wider then the 2.2, so all the parts are SVX only.

If you've done timing belts on anything else, the Subarus will be a piece of cake.
You don't need to remove the radiator, just the cooling fans, acc belts, PS mount (not the PS Pump), and the AC belt tensioner, crank pulley, and timing belt covers.
The new belt even has paint marks that match up with the marks on the pulleys....almost foolproof.

I had it tore down in about 45 minutes, and that included pulling out the remaining pieces of the t-belt, and the 3 idlers.
I haven't removed the water pump yet, but will have to drain the radiator to do that, probably take about 30 more minutes to remove.

I think I could just change the t-belt in about 2 hours, if nothing else was bad.

Really, Subarus are the easiest t-belt changes I've ever done.

That's encouraging. The other cars I've done are Mitsi Galant, (2 x's) Chrysler Sebring, and the Fiat. I did an old, and I mean old Civic once but didn't know the engine was toast until we were done.

I noticed you have the tb cover in your list. What happened to the cover? Did you get my lead on the timing belt?

woah, huck im sorry.....my car saty for a year while i waited for transmission money so i know how you feel
I just ordered my timing belt, i cant take any chances............my "old reliable" (1991 honda accord) is what makes my SVX possible. Never needs anything but oil and a filter. NO PROBLEMS, i know you all hate them becuase of tuners but for an A to B car its hard to beat...

On the TB Cover, the 2 idlers that melted down, got into the center TB Cover, it's probably still usable, but is damaged,, and has a slit worn into it allowing dirt, water, ect. in.
I might try to repare it, instead of replacing it, as money is getting tight

If you've done one on a civic, you'll love the one on the SVX .....Much easier

Huck, you may want to try 1stsubaruparts.com as well... they tend to be slightly cheaper and their customer service is decent.

Yeah, I know it's not as bad as a new car payment (but that is why I've never had a new car), but I just dropped about $150 in it last week on replaceing the front wheel bearing, and the day after I put it back on the road....wham! $500 worth of damage

And as for 1st subaru and Liberty, I plan on checking around for the best prices.

I also noticed the right front strut is leaking, when I was reinstalling the spindle Friday night ......maybe I'll win the Lotto

Huck,
See you got the timing belt on EBay. I stopped bidding as soon as I saw you bid -- I was going to get it for "future use" and I knew you needed it NOW
Hey, I second Matt's comment about being willing to pay to see someone replace the timing belt and water pump. Any chance you'll take pictures and post a "how to"...sort of a "son of 5 spd mod"

Thanks Bill,
I did need the belt , or I wouldn't have bid on it.

As for doing a T-belt at a meet, that's do-able, would rather not do the water pump at a meet, as I'd hate to have to drain the water in a parking lot.

I might get some pictures and do up a how-to on the T-Belt change, I wanted to get some pictures of the melted bearings in the idlers anyway

I checked a local parts place that specializes in jap cars, and they ordered me a water pump for $30.32, and the cam seals for $5.00 each,....so thats a few more buck I shaved off the cost.
I'm going to see if I can locate the bearings that go in the idlers and just press them into the old idlers (that'll save about $150, if I can find them) .
I'm still debating weather or not to use the old Timing cover.

Huck,
A how-to would be great! I've gotten to the point where I try to take pictures of anything I do to my car now (ex. who would have thought the rear speaker covers were integral to the rear shelf?). I've got a complete set of shop manuals for my '92, but I've found that the old "a picture is worth a 1,000 words" saying to be very true
-Bill
p.s. anyone who owns an SVX should have a dependable "back up" car - mine's a '96 Sentra with 145k on it! Change the oil regularly and forget about it....
