Aftermarket trunk strut preference

Okay, this is by no means a promise of anything. It is also not a debate of what is possible and what is not possible.

We all know that the SVX trunk struts are fairly expensive to buy from Subaru, and beyond that will also be running out at some point. We also have yet to really see an off the shelf replacement for them, even in mod-it-yourself form, as we do with the hood struts. (I believe the closest someone has come is something that works, but won't allow the trunk to open the full 90+ degrees)

Assuming it was possible, which would you prefer:

A clone of the OEM Subaru struts with the same performance (albeit freshly manufactured) for half the price of OEM ($50?).

or...

An "upgraded" version with much higher force and spring loads to lift the trunk up upon releasing the latch (or getting a lot closer to that, some assistance might still be needed the first few inches) for about OEM price ($100 or more?).

Keep in mind either of these options would probably also involve some do it yourself mod work to re-use the mounting brackets, similar to the hood struts. But again, assuming Subaru's price is too expensive, or they run out, which of these 2 options would you go for?

Vote in the poll, and also feel free to comment if you have a strong opinion for your choice.

PM me to talk tech about the method I used. I don't want to clutter this thread.

Re: Aftermarket trunk strut preference

If they just work how the stock ones do on my Laguna, I would be happy. I personally don't want one that pops open immediately. The stock ones take little effort to open and you can just let them go after about 45 degrees and it closes nicely.

I would like one like the OEM for about $25.00 (half price of what you mentioned).

Re: Aftermarket trunk strut preference

As I recall, trunk struts from Subaru are about $80 each.

Something a tad more stout wouldn't hurt, but I'd wonder about the long-term stress on the trunk lid mounting points if the struts were crazy-stiff.

My new ones hold the lid (with spoiler) stationary at about 45 degrees.
