Re: 1994 Barcelona Red 5-speed manual

Not saying doing a bad body work job .I worked in a body shop for 3 years. I painted my share of cars. I have seen some crap paint jobs from Macco and I have also seen some top notch ones. You just have to go to,a few and see what kind of work they do. Also doing a lot of the prep work yourself helps. You might just get away with just getting the areas done. with the new color match system and that not being a matalic finish it should be an easy match especially the wing ,roof and bumpers. When I went to get an estimate on just getting the roof and hood painted it was $2,000 at a small family run shop. I just think this way. That 5 speed conversion is not an easy thing to get done. You can't go into a repair shop and say convert my SVX to a 5 speed ( especially a WRX one ) But the seats and bodywork you can shop around for a good price . Also it is not something that has to be done right away. You can get the seat done, and then latter get the dents done and if really bugs you and the paint is a real bad match get it,re painted. You can spread it out over a few years even.

Well, the 'find a good home' angle has not worked out so well. So the car is up on Craigslist.

If you ever have plans of keeping a car for any amount of time, get body work done properly and don't half ass it. Maaco has it's reputation for a reason...
It will also look a hell of a lot better and be a much better selling point when you go to resell. I steer clear of repaints or any car with bodywork once they're older because of the fact that most people cheap out on a paint job or bodywork. I can typically spot a repainted SVX from a mile away because the quality is almost never up to par.

/sorry for the thread hijack here...
The problem with most of the Maaco jobs that everyone does and why they are so terrible in the first place is because it's usually the $299 respray with little to no prep and no clear coat. What does anyone realistically expect for that price. That's not to say they aren't capapble of doing quality work like any other shop but you get what you pay for.

Bottom line is, no SVX is worth investing $4k paint into unless you're just bloody rich or it's like 50k miles on the entire car. There's no reason you can't find a reputable Maaco shop and have it done properly for under $2,500. Paint finishes coming straight from factories on newer cars are comparable to a well done Maaco job, due to cutting overall costs so, it's whatever. No one has the right to nitpick over a $300 finish though lol that's ridiculous... of course it's going to be **** looking haha and with that said a top of the line maaco job will look better than a rusted out pos looking SVX anyway with sunburnt clear coat patches and rough or rust spots all over.

Re: 1994 Barcelona Red 5-speed manual

I agree with Subix . This car stands a chance to be saved. Price is not bad body is in decent shape. I saw were someone replaced the seats with newer Outback seats and it looked good. Also I agree a GOOD Macco Job would help a lot to improve the looks. These car do not get the inspection that a Mustang, Corvette, and others do. I pulled up next to a brand new Dodge Caravan and the paint was so orange peeled I got hardly an image.

Re: 1994 Barcelona Red 5-speed manual

Joy of joys, the car now needs a rear pipe - the one that runs from the Y-pipe back to the rear muffler.

$2000 takes it as-is.

Re: 1994 Barcelona Red 5-speed manual

Yep it's still available. Currently awaiting some bits so I can stop it from sounding like a farm implement and get it back to sounding like a flat six sports car, so it's not driveable for the moment. But it should be very soon.

As-is is now as-was. The exhaust is fixed (thanks Nate for the parts assist!), plus the car has a brand new state inspection and oil change. I fixed the first post; the price is back at $2400. Apologies if this caused any confusion among the the thousands of interested parties.

Actually I have a fellow coming to take a look today. He's from the Frederick MD vicinity. We'll see...
