Free '96 legacy wagon
Not for you! I just had one handed down to me with a bad engine. I haven't heard it yet but there is a terrible knock. The owner's mechanic said it was possibly a bad rod. Before I hid the junkyard for a used engine how much of the rod assy. if any can be changed through the oil pan? BTW it's an N/A 4 cyl 2. something or other. If this is a stupid question sorry i'm trying to think simple first.

Done... when do you need it gone??hehehehe
If there is a rod knock and it is "horrible" it has more than likely damaged the crank... Best bet it to try and get another engine for it to keep it simple and cheap Tom |

It COULD be piston slap too if it's a 2.5.
Before my 2.5 went south for head gaskets, it had an ugly knock when it was cold. Within 5mins of startup, it was quiet as a mouse. It's ugly sounding, but it won't kill the motor. Moral, let the car warm up & see if the knock goes away. If it does, don't sweat it, if not it's motor time.

And then there is the timing belt tensioner knock too!

Thanks for all the replys, I will be picking it up this week. If it didn't damage the crank can the internals be removed through the pan. I have never messed with motor internals so my knowledge is limited. I have never gone beyond a head gasket.

not really... The engine basically needs to be pulled in order to access the piston pin to remove it... its not as simple as the old v engines.

Say it was a rod bearing, could that be replaced?

If it would be best to get a J/Y engine I have a few questions.
Remove engine/trans from the top or the bottom? Is it easier to swap the motor alone or trans and motor. |

easier to pull the engine alone... No a bad rod bearing MOST of the times will damage the crank and/or rod journal, which requires machine work and oversized bearings... Overall its a PITA and *easiest* to get a different engine in there

Especially since you are less than an hour from Harry's, I may be stopping in there on Monday, I'll let you know what they have, but 2.2's are fairly common.

Thanks Dave, I'm pretty sure it's a 2.2. All I remember about it is that it's dark green with the Charcoal stripe at the bottom. Not sure if that means anything. I think you may have seen it at my garage, the guy I rent from is the owner. Anybody know how much a 2.2 weighs?

not sure on the weight but it sounds like an outback wagon.... meaning it has a 2.5... The two tone makes me think it is thats all I could very well be wrong... pics would help distinguish

Even if it is the 2.5, replacing it with a 2.2 is plug & play.

Yeah, with the dark bottom, it's probably an Outback. I'm thinking back to that night... I remember a bunch of Soobs, but not the details.
But, since it's a 96, if it's a 5 speed it's a 2.2 if it's auto it's a 2.5. On the serial plate on the drivers side front strut tower there will be an engine code, either EJ25 or EJ22. There are a few of each flavor at Harry's. Next week is engine special week. Let me know when you're gonna go, I can probably meet you there to give a hand. As for weight??? To move it around, two people can pick one up without too much grief. For installing a lift or hoist of some sort is gonna work best. Are you still renting that garage? How sturdy are the joists?? I have a come-along.

It's an auto, I know that for sure. I still have not picked it up yet. I'm not sure when I'll get around to Harry's either. Thanks for offering to help I will probably take you up on that. As far as the joists go, I don't think I'd trust a lawnmower engine. I also have to wait until the coffers refill, I just scored the other half of my UK headlight set! Wooo! Hooo!
