No they aren't. It's a myth. I have examined the ECU code extensively.

The ones with manuals go faster still if the selected gearing/rev limit allows it.

Nate, I agree with Phil on this, and indeed Phil has done the spadework checking out the actual codes in the electronics.

This is just an urban myth. Somebody should propose it for Mythbusters.

Most of the pre-release roadtests were done on the 91-92 cars, because as you can imagine all the auto magazines were straining at the leash to get a drive in this futuristic [at that time ]coupe.

Some magazine testers like R&T and Autocar run rigorous tests which detail weather and road conditions and test everything with a stopwatch. Mindful of this, when manufacturers like Subaru are providing cars to them for testing they make double sure that their cars go to the magazine testers with strong engines and dynamics.

They want and need good road test results to help sell the cars.

With that in mind you can bet any cars tested in 1992 will give the best figures the SVX is capable of doing, because the manufacturers make sure the testers are getting the very best cars for the tests.

Final drive is another factor at play here. The SVX gearbox has a vary tall [overdrive] final ratio for relaxed highway driving. This affects what top speed can be achieved. The higher the ratio the lower the speed can be achieved in top [overdrive] under neutral conditions.

[Down a long straight hill with a 60 mph wind at your back would prove a different result, but let's not complicate the discussion with exceptions that don't apply 99% of the time]

The USA cars got a seriously high final drive of 1:3.53, while Japanese and Euro and OZ spec cars got 1:3.70. Theoretically this will imply that under neutral conditions a US spec SVX will achieve a lower top speed than an SVX from anywhere else in the world because the rest run with lower final drives.

Under similar conditions it would not surprise me at all if a US car would "max out" in top at 136 mph, while a Euro spec car with the same power could manage 144 mph, based on what was achieved in various road tests.

Joe

Re: 92's hit 160???

I should have pushed her a bit more... I had my 94 at 135mph before. Next time I take her out I will attempt to break it. The car felt fine at that speed, but I did not. A lot can go wrong, if your car is not in tip top shape, I would not attempt it. My car is not in tip top shape at the moment.

There's a video on YouTube of an SVX on the Autobahn in Germany with the speedometer pegged.

Re: 92's hit 160???

i hit 135 in my silver 92 once/// (on the track.... yea thats it) the subaru emblem ripped off!! scared the **** out of me!

but the car wanted MORE! so stable, quiet, comfy..... it was i who was maxed out.... not the car!

i agree with the tip top shape thing tho.... imagine a blowout at that speed! it is not safe nor smart to do this on any road other than a track tho for sure.... luckily I-5 late at night is suprisingly similar to the Bonneville Salt Flats.....

I did 143 in my 1994... So there is no speed limiter.. Mythbusters are not needed

The Autobahn SVX has the speed limiter "removed" with the Australian chip...

Okay, Okay, I stand corrected. I figured that b3lha was right as I was typing that post seeing as how much you have looked into the ecu's

Re: 92's hit 160???

running flat out on the salt flats would be okay, or a track, with helmet etc. but, could you imagine nailing a tree, telephone poll dog, bird, etc at that speed. Would be sure death or worse, and the car wouldn't look to good with a pile of bloody flesh stuffed into it.

Re: 92's hit 160???

Like I have said many times in the past, my 94 FWD was significantly faster than any of my other cars (92s, 96 and 97)

only problem w/ this math is given the same size tires a car geared w/ 3.53 gears will have a HIGHER top speed than 3.70. Those, 3.70, will get you off the line a lil better. Example, generalized, Bonneville cars run 2.xx gears, while 1/4 mile drag racers run 4.xx gears.

Gear ratio math
RPM = G.R. x Cruise speed x 336 / Tire size dia. inches (actual, as in car resting on level surface, measuring from wheel center to ground)
if you wanna figure out gearing for a certain speed then use this
Ideal G.R. = Cruise RPM x Tire dia. / 336 x Cruise speed
