Lan's performance transmission - any feedback?

I know Lan was offering a performance 4eat for our svx's a few months back...anyone know of any actual buyers? I searched and found that nexus 7 had purchased one but was having difficulty on the install. I'd like to get some feedback b/c right now I am kinda on the fence about whether to go higher performance auto or take the 6spd plunge. Thanks in advance, chris

Re: Lan's performance transmission - any feedback?

take the plunge!

but if not i'd check w/ your local trans shops and see if anyone can build a 4EAT.
I'd definitely get the transgo shift kit installed as it has a couple items that improve trans life. Stuff you can't install w/o complete trans disassembly.

yah, ha! take the plunge with no guarantee. Sorry but for $3k + I am not willing to be the guinea pig. If I am going to drop that much I'd like to at least have some confirmation that this is a worth while endeavor.

But yeah, i'll look around to see what trans shops can do locally.

I was reading on the world forums and found that YourConfused had major issues with his ECUTune 4EAT.

i thought that the 5/6MT was all good.
whaddya mean guinea pig?
if you mean AT, i agree.
i would think somebody in NY has gotta be able to build a good 4EAT.
bulletproof, no. where as the MT's seem pretty bulletproof.
Unless you sidestep that clutch @ 6K

Just me, but if I had the money I would get the Level10 (New Jersey) auto tranny.

Re: Lan's performance transmission - any feedback?

Yeah I may look back into the level 10 option, thanks guys.

Schralper, as for guinea pig I was just referring to Lan's transmission, I haven't heard much of anything in terms of thoughts/opinions/feedback as to the actual real world performance. I know the 5/6spd's are a reliable/proven option, however, I am just not sure I want to go that route, you know?

I'm curious, Why would you not choose a MT? If you decide not to make big power then a 5 speed would work fine. I would probably trust the 06- wrx trannys for more then stock HP as well.

He's made references to it over here as well. If he doesn't reply to this thread, I'd send him a PM....

1) I have no engine brakeing when the transmission is placed in third gear on the selector (except for about 1 sec. every 30-40 seconds.)

2) I have a flashing power light for the sol C. Put in a rew one and still same code. It randomly locks up and putting in the fwd fuse makes things even crazier.

3) With the fwd fuse in it won't shift at WOT, in any gear most of the time. It also doesn't stay in fwd with the fuse in.
And, the light on the dash deosn't mean anything as the light may be on, but will also bind, when it wants too. Somethimes the fwd light will go out, but the car will still be in fwd mode.

4) The 1-2 shift is so hard that I have replaced and broken motor and trans mounts. I am now most likely just going to weld mine solid so I don't spend more money in that area of the car. The 2-3 and 3-4 shifts are quick but soft.???

5) The resistor read 12.8 ohms which is good. I un plugged it and it took all of three hard runs down my street (1/2 mile or so) to break the first trans mount; the thing shifted so hard.

6) Oh, and for some strange reason it now shifts at 6K rpm instead of the 7300 rpm that the ecu tune chip was letting it shift at.

I just got a new pan gasket in the mail and hope to take the pan off soon to see what I can find there.

All of these issues were not present in the old trans, which was just removed due to front diff failure.

I bet I missed something, but that are the most common issues that I have been dealing with.

I cannot understand why is he still selling those trannies to the public if they are defective?

Thumbs down Re: Lan's performance transmission - any feedback?

I am currently looking for a front diff for my old trans (working perfectly when removed) so I can get this flaming piece of **** out of my car.

I went the lazy route and bought this instead of the level 10 trans. I would have prefered a stick, as they are fun to drive, but have a bad knee, so I was stuck with the auto option. If I were to do it again, I would rather become a eunuch than deal with this headache of a transmission.

The guy basically seems lika a hack. I won't even talk about how 'wonderful' the 2V7F performs in our cars.

Just remember that when you buy from a guy who refuses to test anything he sells you are just taking a chance. I was a dumbass for sending a penny to him in the first place, but hopefully others won't waste their money as I did.

Oh, and it has torn up 2 trans mounts and a set of STI mounts due to it's bad shifting habits.

Edit: Phil, I installed it in my garage. I do know what I am doing (not like you implied otherwise). I am ASE certified Master Tech, L1 Advanced Level diag tech, X1 Undercar Specialist, MACS and MECP certified.

Re: Lan's performance transmission - any feedback?

Yourconfused, I am sincerely sorry to hear about your series of unfortunate events. This really is disconcerning news. Hopefully there is something you can do legally, civil claim?? I suppose in the grand scheme of things it isn't THAT much of a loss, just a transmission right? I do think I am going to go the level 10 route, a few members here stevesby and cdigerlando have had the level 10 tranny for years now with no issues. My tranny isn't too bad right now, however, I am on my third transmission right now and now the symptoms of an aligning tranny....1-2 shift flare and takes a while for the TQ to engage.
