cheap paint job under $100

So I was searching around the net and came across several resources for this. Most of this will be done on my free truck. This will be done with rustoleum acrylic enamel thinned 50% rolled onyes this how its done, lots of wetsanding between coats. There are lots of info on this and a lot of them look real good and are easy to touch up. You have to paint over several days due to thinning of the paint and thin coats but from what Ive read is very durable and cheap. Look it up if your a cheap a$$ like me Most of the info I found is within 172 pages of threads on this http://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1555133&page=169 yeah I know its a Honda site. NOT for the SVX
and another more detailed than skimming thru 150+ pages

The more I look around on this I find some good results

http://www.rickwrench.com/50dollarpaint.html

I know it sounds disturbing but Im willing to try this on a old truck, its better than the primer and rust that is on it right now. The corvair has updates on how the paint is holding up after 8 months. It is cheaper for supplies but requires more labor which if you are doing it yourself is free.
Hot rod magazine did a 62 falcon this way http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/b.../photo_08.html
Also cars were painted this way back in the beginning of the auto industry.

HMMMM a roller & wetsanding huh? Just HOW MUCH wet sanding? I'd bet it's a LOT. I'd prefer a rattlecan job. FAR less sanding required for similar results.

There's a place called Alsa Corp that can put different paints in a spray can. They're the one that sells the chrome paint.

See...the problm with a rattle can job is..you CAN'T get results like that. The roll on method, after reading the article, seems like it could actually work. the only problem is, you essentially have a single stage paint job...no clear coat. Also, its solid colors..no metallics, pearls, candy coats, ect...It seems to me this would have similar results as an old laquer paint job...a simple color with ALOT of depth...perfect for that driveway restoration (I know a guy I have to tell this to now)

...asfor the amount of wetsanding... ALOT!! Firstly, you'll have to sand the whole car down, taking out every knick, scratch, chip, lump, dirt speck, ect. They say to finish it off with 220, which seems a bit course to me..but then again, Im not used to rolling paint on figure they say it covers in about 6-10 coats....Id imagine you'll want to wetsand between a few of those..and once or twice before final buffing.

hmmm you can't get a shine from a spray can?
I know at least 100 model car builders that would argue that point, including me.

That's Duplicolor clear over black primer. 3 coats wet sanded with 1000grit between each coat, then polished with Turtle Wax rubbing compound

What scale is the model?

You can definitely get good results out of a spray can, but a real car is hardly a model. On surfaces like the hood, a model is small enough that variations in the paint shade are difficult to see. On a real car, the hood is a huge flat surface, often seen in bright light, and it's easy to pick out and imperfections in the paint. Light/dark spots get pretty obvious.

Nice model though! I build R/C planes.

Im doing this just because I have only 50$ in the truck so far. My original plan was to use some of the rubberized bedliner stuff but found this methond more interesting. The truck has a fairly straight body with a little rust but want to save my $$ for the drivetrain. Im in the process of building a garage and post on the progress of this paint technique.
