extremely weird problem??? MAF? ECU?

My car showed all the classic signs of a bad mass air flow sensor it would initialy stall and start right back up and i would go out and tap on the maf sensor and it would seem to fix the issue. So i picked up a maf sensor and put it on at the same time i figured i'd remove the resonator on the intake after all that i took it for a drive and was extremely dissapointed. It seems i have lost quite a bit of low end power (this might just be my imagination) but the next issue is not in my head i floor it and the power light goes on I figure it will pull right to redline and shift.....it doesn't it goes to about 5200 rpm's and acts like a rev limiter kicks in....it won't shift to the next gear and it just sputters?????? I got back home and figured it was the ecu (stock) needed to be erased so i unhooked the battery and tried again......Same results.....now i'm pissed so i get back home and figure the maf sensor i put in was worse than the one i had...put the old one back in and still it is doing the same thing.

Everything was working fine before i started messing with it (aside from the occasional stall) no problems shifting at all. When I start it I have no flashing Power light. What the hell did I do?

Did I screw up the ecu? I was planning on upgrading it anyway but not until I got My Koni's and Motorsport springs on this week.

Any Ideas

I would check your coils, your TPS, and in worse case senario, timing chain.

Could you have skipped a tooth on the timing belt? Maybe that isn't it, but don't rule it out.

"Worse than." ---- You appear to have noted a definite difference between MAF units. Think on this again.

On the basis of logic, it could be that you have two faulty MAF sensors. Fault finding by interchanging components, even if the replacement is new, has the danger of this possibility.

Not an encouraging suggestion I know, but you should take this into account.

It would appear that you have done nothing which should damage the ECU.

Could it be a leak in the air intake between the MAF and the throttle body? Did you pull any of the pipes off when you changed the MAF?

It sounds to me like one of your cats has disintegrated and the exhaust gas is unable to get away.

Well my mechanic answered my question and one of you already called it "Timing belt jumped" and serpintine belt off as well.

My mechanic is tearing into it as we speak....I'm afraid to see the bill

Any Idea what would have caused this?

Alright Just received the call and apparently the harmonic balancer is the culprit, Serpentine belts jumped busted/melted all 3 timing belt covers and timing is off (why it won't start) timing belt not in stock 1-2 days and after it is installed we'll have to see how the engine is running...wondering if iany engine damage was done hopefully not!!!!
The weird thing is even though it ran rough last night it turned over and ran....and today won't even start.

Oh my darlin' serpentine

Glad you got a handle on it Brodie.

The "serpentine" belt is another name for the timing belt. It is extremely long and goes all over the place, hence the adjective serpentine

Other than jumping off the cogs and damaging the plastic cover, the engine should be undamaged. The engine is a "non-interference" type. That means even if the belt comes off, the valves can not hit the pistons, so in theory nothing can be damaged internally.

How it happened, the belt was left on too long, and wore out. They are meant to be replaced every 40,000 miles, but sometimes it does not get done.

So take a note of your present mileage, so next time you know when it needs to be replaced.

Joe

not really. if he is saying the harmonic seperated and sent the outer helf of the pulley into the timing covers, this is worse than expected. granted there should be NO internal damage to the engine I am sure you will need a new crank pulley too which don't come cheap esp. if they are OEM. Timing belt probobly got chewed up too. that is if my understanding of what your mechanic stated is correct
