FWD or AWD which transmission is better?
Ive been seeing more FWD SVXs on Autotrader lately and was wondering if the FWD models had suffered as much problems as the AWD. It also seems there are more 1990-1995 FWD Subarus in junkyards to get transmissions from.

FWDs
FWD cars were only made in 94 and 95.

FWD tranbsmissions dont explode as easy as the awd ones do. Theres a woman in my town with a fwd svx that has the original engine and transmission. the car has 320,000 miles and counting. Running and shifting strong
my car has the fwd tranny too. No problems as of yet. What kills the transmissions is heat. The heat is caused by added driveline friction and the weight of the car as well. Tranny coolers help reduce the problem, as does a lower geared transmission (4.44's cope with the cars weight better) the fwd tranny has alot less driveline stress and friction.

Also, AWD doesn't help the life of the SVX tranny either. All the traction and torque at low RPMs causes much more wear and tear and HEAT than a FWD tranny would. This is also a problem with the Mitsu 3000GT VR-4

The crazy 3.545 final drive kills the SVX trannies. Because the insides are spinning so slowly, the fluid doesn't move around so much and then parts heat up and then pop goes the transmission. 4EAT's aren't that bad when they have a proper drive ratio (4.11 proves to be quite nice). AWD/FWD can make a difference, but it's irrelevant if you get a good final drive ratio.

Does anyone know if a 94 fwd tranny will swap into an awd slot? Im guessing all I have to do is remove the rear driveshaft and swap the axles but are the modules and connectors the same?

As far as I know, yes, though youll want the fwd tcu. Someone was running an awd tcu with theur fwd tranny and it worked, but as I recollect it shifted rather roughly
It would be easier to swap in a good 4.44 tranny, and more benificial in obvious ways
