Unhappy woe is us

Randy and Immortal

Sorry to hear about the problems. My own box is gone the same. I have been commuting for the last two weeks with only first and third.

Just this week, my 19000lbs B&M cooler arrived. Also, my '92 workshop manual arrived, take a bow Ryan at Subaruparts, and Scott, so now I am armed with enough knowledge to get the job done right.

I am not sure that the rebuild will be a success, although I know the guy doing it for me is pretty competent, simply this is one SOB of a complex piece of kit. His guess without opening mine is the brake band is gone.

Best of luck with the fix, hope you are not off the road too long.

Joe
PS I am starting to think in an obsessive fashion about a current model Maserati Quattroporte V8. 32 valve engine, wall to wall leather and briarwood, 335 horsepower and manual gearbox. Only RWD, but maybe it does not spend so much time in the service bay having the transmission out. Subaru do not deserve to have sales success with the current H6 3.0 after the kind of cr.p we SVX looney obsessives have to endure because of their under-engineering incompetence.

I had initially fixed my car over at AAMCO. After 2 rebuilts, I asked for full refund. That came back after a couple of months. The Suby dealer that I used did a good job this time. Nothing leaks. It's all good. From my past mistakes and what i have seen here, unless you send it to Suby dealer, most shops can't do SVX trannies. Perhaps L10 might have a better luck. What do you think?

Huck has a tranny guy local to him that will be doing the 5 spd swap with Huck's help. I have to locate the parts, Huck will supply the needed fabrication stuff. Hopefully from here on out my biggest problem will be burning up clutches - I can handle that.

I am wondering if I should send the auto box to level 10 now in anticipation of the pending self destruction of my wife's svx tranny.

In the meantime I'm driving the wife's old '88 celica with 188,000 miles on the original auto tranny (which I changed fluid on today) This car used to feel like a rocket pre-SVX when I was driving my '89 suby wagon, now it feels like poop. I tried to con her into driving it and letting me take her SVX - didn't work.

Randy - Since mine started slipping, Kim has been asking about the cost of the auto tranny, replacements, 5spd, etc. I just told her your story and went through a couple of the other tranny replacement saga's I've read here and amazingly it did not scare her out of her SVX.

She's a keeper.

Seeing how we are so attached to are cars we should all have two or three of them ,so that we will always have one to drive when the other is in the shop. to make it even better park one spare a your shop for a small fee and the other in the driveway. this way it would be convenant when we drop one off you drive home in the other one.

Your first post, SVXPILOT, you are very welcome.

Good point, with a few cars there is no cold turkey, just continual goosing by the service agents.

However, if it is a little mad to have one SVX, then maybe it is a type of stark raving lunacy to have two or three! I say this with all deference to the many members who have more than one SVX. May their wheel bearings never sing, nor their trannies hum "Slip Slidin' Away"

Yes, that plan is in the works. I *WILL* have another, waiting in the wings, if this one ever completely craps out. As obsessed as I am, I cannot see myself *ever* driving anything else.

Matt,
I knew she was a keeper the first time I met her. You guys were absolutely meant for each other. You make a great couple. May you have many happy years.

Meanwhile, having the autobox sent to L-10 now, in anticipation of Kim's tranny going belly up, may not be such a bad idea. Either that, or hold it as a second core allowance for your local Suby dealer. You might check with them and see if that's an option. If they would allow it, you may just be able to replace with a Suby reman in the "manageable money" category.

<<Wait, no... I want 2 of every color... >>

So does that mean that you want two color lower/black upper and two solid color for each base color?

Then does a black Mica with a 97 grill differ from a 92?

How many different color combos are there for the 5 years?

Doug

PM me his number. Hope his prices are better than subaruparts.com, though. (not that they're high -- just takes longer to get here -- did I mention Drop Ship -- Scott, Ryan, are you listening? )
Or try Earl Duff - the parts manager is Doug Burgess 800-659-7278. I think they order on Weds., usually have it by Friday, could possibly have it to you by Mon or Tuesday.

Thanks, Bill. Word today is I may not need any parts. I don't want to jinx things by talking too much about it. Hopefully a good report tomorrow.

I will keep the super-great guys at Earl Duff in mind, though.

The core alone is of no value unless you have a "special shipping case" that the remans come in. At least that is what I was told when I tried to gain some credit for a good core.

Since then though I have had to use the pump and I plan on removing the valve body and installing a Trans-Go shift kit for future install in the present tranny.

Randy - you made her day.

I think I'll hang onto this one for a little while and send it in I gather up some extra cash (the tranny, not the wife)

On the upside, my family of subies made the high mileage subaru page.

http://hometown.aol.com/nv1z/subaruhighmileage.html

Since I have been driving the toyota, I am having a hard time understanding how anyone can have an SVX sit in the garage as a weekend car and commute daily in a POS.

I'd rather drive my 2-speed svx than anything else.
