tube thing

on the passenger side header there is a metal piping that screws in the manifold what is this and why is it there. there is not one on the drivers side. i noticed this tube that threads in. it rattles and makes a bell noise. a noise i have been trying to find for a month. i can see threads like it is not in all the way but i took a wrench to it and would not budge. the metal surround is making the noise as engine shakes like normal.

The only thing I can think of is the pipe for the EGR system. If it is loose I think it will also leak exhaust gas.

It screws into the back of the exhaust manifold and is in a very difficult place to reach, lots of wires and hoses in the way. There is usually a heat shield over the pipe.

Part #2 on the parts drawing from subaruparts.com shown there>>

i think we got a winner. yeah u are not spose to see the threads right. and yes very hard to get to. i found it when i had the car raised over my head. that could make my car run sluggish right. if leaking and not reading right. car seems to run really good and fast especially after shift kit install. the kit works wonders. killed out my minor high gear flares.

Well at least you have alot of daylight hours to work on it.
When I have changed engines I left that pipe right in place. I did not want to mess with it.
You may want to try some high temperature glue.

If you buy a new pipe and need an exhaust manifold I have one. Oh wait I have the manifold with the egr pipe.

is there a way to test. i needed a hose or pipe wrench with the normal wrenchs i am pushing so hard i slip off it. even with the right size. what is the breaker fluid to get out the o2s i might use that to loosen then tighten again. oh yeah does this make your car run sluggish

The two best penetrants I've found to work on rusty bolts have been PB Blaster and Kroil. Neither of them are very cheap, but it's worth a little bit more to not be so frustrated when trying to take off some old nuts and bolts.
