Talking SVX goes faster in manual mode?

It seems that I get better acceleration through all 4 gears when I run in manual mode. I actually seem to be getting used to shifting instead of keeping it in drive.

Is it OK to use the SVX Tranny like this? It sure does seem faster!

It would seem faster in my old SVX aswell, but i toasted the tranny being a shifta-holic now shifting is reserved for BMW M3's and the likes...

manual mode is for use in conditions where there is little traction. It starts out in 2nd gear and holds the gear longer to reduce wheelspin. I don't see how this would help acceleration.

I take it that you mean starting in 1st gear and moving the stick through 2nd, 3rd & D?

This will give the feel of better acceleration, but without timing, it is hard to confirm this.

New Subies have a gated stick, which discourages this sort of use. Could it indicate that manual changing puts extra strain on the tranny?

Actually Andy,
Depending on which model of "new" subbie your refering to, some actually encourage this by way of the 5EAT Sportshift....

The sportshift is a completely different animal. The SVX has the 4EAT, and the newer derivatives use a gate. I believe that the 5EAT was designed with the shift buttons in mind.

I do of course realize that 5EAT is a different animal , although Im not sure if it was designed with the shift buttons or not as it also has the "shift gate", but it would be interesting to see how well one works in an SVX

Would a 5eat bolt into an SVX?

Just wondering.

It probably would fit, but you'd need to modify your driveshaft, as the 5EAT is slightly longer...

Also, you'd need to get a matching TCU as the SVX's wouldn't be compatible.

From my understanding Manual mode is ignored unless the shifter is in 2 or 3. In 2 the car starts from a dead stop in 2nd gear. In 3 the car still starts in 2 but will shift to 3 as soon as possible.

This would slow you down if anything.

Some members (such as myself), like putting the tranny in manual mode and shifting through the gears ourselves. I realize that you don't NEED to put the tranny in manual mode in order to do this, but it is a lot less likely to downshift and upshift on its own if you do. Subaru also says that putting the tranny in manual mode forces it to use a "more agressive AWD map", possibly giving the car a different feeling due to changes in torque distribution. Does it make the car faster? Probably not, but it is fun!!

Hi Dave, yes when it is in Manual Mode, the TCU applies the transfer clutch, much earlier than normal and with more pressure. This is because, this Mode is for use in slippery conditions, so the slight binding that will occur, will not be a problem on the slippery surface.

Harvey.
