Bet that was a WRX with a manual tranny. The viscous coupling in the center diff on the manual trannys is almost non-existent. If he had the AT, it probably wouldn't have gotten stuck.

sand != snow. Sand is a lot harder to get through.

That is why he got stuck... Not the manual tranny issue... My center diff has been more than lively in the past... Very easy to get the rear wheels into the action

Subaru will always make awesome AWD cars... However they can't make up for stupid mistakes made by the owners...

Sure, but you have a torque converter, which makes limiting wheelspin from a stop easier. That guy may have had dreams of sliding through sand...poor sucker dug his own grave.

AWD enhances vehicle traction an all kinds of ROAD surfaces. Beach sand is not a road. AWD does not make you invinceable. Even a Hummer has it's limits.....

I think someone forgot to lower the air pressure in their tires.

Sand can be one of the toughes things to get through for any vehicles. Remember back in 94??? when the US invaded Somalia with the big televised landing on the beaches. There is a reason why you didn't see any of the HumVees driving up the beaches. 95% simply sunk in the sand. My dad who was working for the defense dept showed me some of the confinscated pics the media took. Pretty funny.

Hocrest can attest to the Subie AWD in the pine barrens. He proceeded to get his Legacy "beached" in the stuff. Not a single wheel was touching the ground.
