Shudder on acceleration

I recently acquired a 92 SVX with 16,000 original miles from a 93 year old lady, a retired teacher in Florida, who had purchased it new. (I know this sounds suspect but is true) It had been very well maintained and drove very well. The car now has 20,000 miles and has developped a "shudder" which first became evident at around 45-50 mph and will now occur at lower speeds, especially when the car has been driven a bit. Two dealers have told me the transmission is fine, albeit after a very cursory inspection. One suggested the problem was rear bushings and told me not to worry. Since then, the problem has become more pronouced, more worrisome. Am I right to worry? I live on a small island with one Subaru dealer, the one who told me not to worry. I have asked them to do some research into the problem, but would very much appreciate any advice members could provide. Again, the problem is a sort of shudder, similar to that felt when driving over ridges in pavement designed to get you to slow down, which can become quite pronounced, shaking the whole car. After reading a few postings here, my fear is that it involves the transmission. I have booked a change of fluid, etc. for next Tuesday and am not driving the car until then.
I will be anxiously checking here for your comments. Thanks.

I had a similar shudder around 30 mph. It only happened under normal acceleration. It turned out to be too much tranny fluid. Hopefully yours is something simple and cheap like that. Good luck.

I had this happen as well. It turned out that the front U-Joint of the driveshaft was frozen on one axis. That was causing a shudder at certain speeds and after about three months shredded the transmission joint.

It most likely happened because it wasn't driven much, sounds like your situation.

Since the SVX does not have replaceable U joints, They have to cut off the existing U joints and weld in new yokes with replaceable U joints.

Check with CDG here on the network. There was a shudder in the pearlie I sold him that was only present under load (When the accelerator was depressed) When you got off of the gas, it went away.

It turned out to be a front drive axle was binding up. Replaced the axle and no problems since.

A good place for remanufactured axles is http://raxles.com They run about $150 each. They send you the axle and you send them back your old axle for rebuilding in their pre-paid shipping box. Their axles have all new u-joints and new boots filled with Amsoil grease.

Thumbs up Welcome

Hi Robert and welcome to the forum.

Nice to have such a low mileage car on board

Because the shudder is strong enough to shake the car as you describe, I also feel the guys are correct, it is a frozen CV on the front axle, or else a U joint on the prop shaft.

However, while you are having the ATF oil changed..... Get the Subaru guys to check if your brake band needs adjusting. Being a 92 car, it will have the original friction material, unless recalled for upgrade. In any case, having this band adjusted is important. if it starts to slip and "flare", it could burn up the box in short time.

ive had a similar problem for a few months. right butterfly valve doesnt open so it doesnt get enough air. it shudders at idle, sometimes during normal accelleration, randomly upon releasing the gas, and rarely during normal driving. shifting to neutral remedied it for a while but is no longer effective. ive also had a full diagnostic so i know its nothing else. you might want to poke around just to check it out.
