Re: Maniac Electric Motors Alternator Update

7/1/14 Still no uprated alternators on the maniac Motors web page. Was going to call them but I'll just wait.

I no longer recommend them due to quite a few failures. (maybe lower rate than box store but still over half a dozen)

BTW, was good to chat a bit the other day, John.
I agree.
While Christian was awesome about refunding me I am unhappy about the whole ordeal.
There is more to my story than I am willing to share on a public forum.

Re: Maniac Electric Motors Alternator Update

I've had a maniac alternator for a few years now and within a year it keeps Goin out. I've taken it to a local alternator and generator shop and they replaced a diode and worked fine until a few days ago. The idiot lights came on dimly at a stop and when I checked voltage... She was putting 12.8v and that's about what the battery read with the car off.

Should I replace the diodes again (~$90) or new alternator? The battery is new. Also is the alternator mod worth it?

Thanks in advance

I would recommend you contact Christian at MM, she may offer an extended warranty.

Re: Maniac Electric Motors Alternator Update

Just for anyone interested. I called Maniac and spoke with Christian. They have no plans to offer the HO alternator for the SVX and that they just have the stock replacement.

On the bright side, I decided to perform John's wiring mod after only getting about 12.4V output. Now that its done the max output is 13.7V (~2000 RPM) which is much better but still not good enough. Thats why I reached out to Maniac about the alternator replacement.

Bonus - The stock output unit is now $230 with just a $25 dollar core. Bummer

Re: Maniac Electric Motors Alternator Update

Extended conversation with Christian at Maniac today.

Her work staff is very busy and a bit backlogged at the moment, so she doesn't have the time or manpower to produce the HO alternator for the next couple of months. She wants to offer them again in late spring to her lineup

Since her source of German voltage regulators dried up, she has been looking for reliable replacement regulators for our cars.

She rebuilt just one HO alternator for Halistan over the past year, using a newer, more stable voltage regulator from the Rand Group "Rand-Tek". She has not heard back from him about any problems, so this is encouraging to her. She does not want to rebuild something that would not last.

I will contact him to see how his alternator is holding up. This new RAND regulator is only used in her HO rebuilds.

Rand-Tek is an American company, producing automotive products worldwide. Designed and manufactured in China and Tiawan.

Re: Maniac Electric Motors Alternator Update

John - I mentioned your name in my conversation with her but you clearly have a better report . I am not in desperate need of the alternator yet as mine is almost out but I am hesitant to buy second hand new stock since I would really like the benefit of the warranty.

As always thanks for what you do

13.7V in a normal driving state with average load, in a hot state, is quite good. On a cold startup in the morning, the alternator is in a cold state and the alternator should be at about 14.1v, dropping as it warms up.

Re: Maniac Electric Motors Alternator Update

The 13.7 peak was at cold startup with no load
