Claret Tri-Tone?

Here's the poop... in the R&T guide there's a curious picture...Mr Iga driving a Claret, that appears to be a tri-tone. For those of you who own the guide, it's pg68.

Here's the question, that requires some speculation. Was this to be a companion to the Liquid Silver tri-tone? Was there to be a "base" model in the lineup? The wheels tell me that it's an early prototype. Lets air this one out & see what the consensus is.

Re: Claret Tri-Tone?

I would surmise that its just a test vehicle that didn't make its way through complete production, by not having the entire car painted. Those just look like primed front and rear bumpers.

Re: Claret Tri-Tone?

That's just it, look close, the bumpers are two toned. Just above the character line they're Claret. Below, they're grey(gray whatever)

Perhaps it's a coating to protect the panels from the stones.

Re: Claret Tri-Tone?

notice also though the rigidity of the lines on the body panels, it looks like a prototype to me.

Re: Claret Tri-Tone?

Hmmm.. It doesn't have the inset tail lights that the widebody prototype does. I also notice there's no sunroof, and some sort of tape around the edge of the plastic garnish piece (below the rear window).

Re: Claret Tri-Tone?

This is a pre-prodution prototype, as evidenced by what appears to be a finished interior. I believe the interior of the same car is pictured on pg69 at the top. It's an escaine interior, making it an "L" model. Being a P-P prototype, it'd be in full production trim, including paint.
That's what leads me to believe that the "L" was to be a tri-tone. Gray cladding was a hallmark of the low line cars from the day.
