The HDD is already packaged, in its own box. I recently bought a relatively inexpensive MiniDV camcorder, the Elura 100. It's small, light, and takes external video and audio inputs. It'll mount nicely in the car and allow me to use external 'bullet' cams. I think I paid about $320 or $340 - not a huge leap over the one you're not happy with. In my opinion, trying to buy a camera that does stills and video is pointless. It will do one or the other, or neither, well.
