crank damper gone - ordered one-piece from Dayle

Mine totally separated this AM. Down to my old Norton for getting to/from work (not the best in these days of afternoon thunderstorms in FLA).

At least it failed gracefully, threw the belts off with no shredding, outer part slid forward but did not damage the radiator/fan housings, or slide back to tear into the plastic dust shield over the timing belt.

Ordered a new one-piece, full-sized pulley from Dayle....Dayle are you listening...it didn't by chance go out in an an express delivery mode did it?

edit: for those who look in, Dayle answered in an external to the forum e-mail...great service IMO.

Thumbs up

Sounds like you got lucky with that one.

I have Dayles full size one-piece on both svx's now - I am very happy with them. He shipped them out very very fast too. I hope you are happy with yours.

I'm back on the road.

My wife even thought the pulley was "pretty" (this from a woman who normally has no feelings for mechanical aesthetics).

thanks Dayle.

information, please

I'm getting the impression that this pulley should be replaced as a matter of preventive maintenance. What's the story on this one-piece, full-size replacement?

Thanks,
dcb

the OEM piece is a harmonic damper, i.e., a steel inner part and the outer part (pulley) with about an eighth-inch thick layer of bonded rubber joining them. The failure mode is for the rubber to give it up over time due to heat, etc. and the pulley separates from the inner part (that bolts to the crankshaft.

Dayle's replacement (and other like pieces) is to use a single piece aluminum pulley. You lose the harmonic damper action. Nobody seems to know how bad this will be in the long run. I only have about 75 miles on mine so the only aspect I can comment on is fit & finish (which is great).

decisions, decisions...

Geez, Louise; a new crank pulley goes for $148 on subaruparts.com. That's about three times what I'd guessed.

Thanks for the info, Lee.

I'm sure you are already making some decisions. Be careful and God bless.
