Cruise Control

I replaced the bulbs behind my cruise control button on the cluster to the left of the steering wheel. Now, every time I try to push in the cruise control button to activate it, it pops right back out. It will not depress and stay there. I am totally frustrated. Does anyone know what the fix is?

If yours is like 99 and 9/10% of all SVXes I've known, it will take several depressions/releases of the button before it will actually hold. It's a common problem.

Dont worry

It doesn't stay in when pressed.

On most (including mine) you may have to press a couple of times to get the indicator light to stay on, because the contacts get corroded slightly with non-use. I noticed this on the way to Reading, but on the way home I had pushed it enough times so that it would go on with the first push.

The cruise button comes all the way back out after it is pushed and the "actived" light comes on. After the car is turned off the "activation" is shut off automatically and the light will be off.

Thanks for the replies so far...

It was working fine until I changed the bulbs. Now I can push it in dozenns of times in a row and it won't stay depressed. The light comes on as I am depressing, but goes right out as it immediately releases.

You WERE saying that you replaced the illumination, correct?

There are two "sockets" in the switch. A blue one, which contains the "On" indicator light (which would have a gold "condom") and a dark brown or dark grey (can't remember off the top of my head, the exact color) socket that houses the illumination (with a green "condom") bulb. Notice my failure (on purpose) to use the word "yellow." Darn, I said "yellow." Crap, I said "yellow" again . . . AAARRRGGGHHH!

Did you "build" the new bulbs, or did you order OE with bulb in socket? If you built it, there's the possibility of excess wire, no allowing the bulb to seat correctly, causing a clearance problem. If OE, you might not have the bulb seated correctly, again, causing a clearance problem, not allowing the button its full length of travel.

Thanks Randy,
I built some bulbs and I had purchased some. I don't remember which two I put in for the cruise control. I'll pull it apart again and check the wiring and seating. That could be the problem.
