The instructions include directions on where to drill out the bottom of the housing, after cutting and removing the old piston, etc. The insert is threaded at the base and once the housing is drilled correctly will allow you to draw the insert down into the housing tube using the included allen head bolt. A rubber sleeve fits around the cut edge to prevent water intrusion. No welding required.

Re: injector replacements?/suspension replacements?/seat replacements

oh hell yeah, im down with simplicity, I'm liking this route more and more. I priced out Legacy and Legacy Outback struts today, all the way around and I'm lookin at pernear 800 bucks for Monroe Sensatracs (Napa Generic ****) so the price on the Koni Inserts is actually quite good.

Thanks for the help guys appreciate it

Best of luck with the swap torxxx. You will not regret springing for the Konis!

Re: injector replacements?/suspension replacements?/seat replacements

I guess the noob question of the day is going to be what springs/spring rate do I need to get to go with the inserts? I'm an offroad suspension guy, not a sports car suspension person, so I have no clue what's involved in choosing stiffness of spring. I realize these are adjustable spring rate struts, but I'm guessing theres more than 1 choice of spring? and whats the price normally run on those? What I'm saying is I need a # to take to my wife, to justify why I'm putting this kind of $ into "her" car

Re: injector replacements?/suspension replacements?/seat replacements

The Konis work just fine with the stock springs. I believe those $$s you were going to justify to the wife would be better spent on new strut mounts and rubber cushions that deteriorate with age.
And yes Brett, I was aware of the subtle humor there. Thanks for noticing!
Again, just my $.02.

But not necessarily off road.
You can raise your SVX with stiffer springs,
(like QA1 at about $36.00 each)
but then you need to weld mounts onto the strut bodies,
(before you install the inserts)
AND you can install spacers,
(like they do with Outbacks)
to get a little more ground clearance.
More on this later.

I'm curious what kind of *modifications* needed to make the Legacy struts work in a SVX. I can think of the upper strut mount three posts will not line up with the SVX body. But, new holes can be drilled easy enough. I wonder what else will be the hurdle aside from the wrong spring rate and wrong shock valve rates.

modifying the knuckle to accept the different distance between strut bolts...

I'd modify the holes on the strut mount due to thinner wall metal.

What else is a show stopper?

I read somewhere here that possibly a strut from a '91 Legacy may work due to the proper extension and compression lengths. I'll see if I can take off the struts off a '91 in the junk yard and bring it home for a comparo.

I'm talking about the knuckle, not the mount....

Re: injector replacements?/suspension replacements?/seat replacements

guys I work @ a subaru junkyard so I have access to tons of older parts so I can look for the 91 legacy struts to compare. I'm always down for retrofitting. If a 91 tophat is closer to SVX (which is should, I don't understand why Subaru would change their templates and jigs for a car that they made less than 10k of each year). As for redrilling the strut towers, thats not needed. One would use the SVX tophats.

The car that I imagine would have closer to match struts would be a MY90/91 Legacy SS. They came with an automatic and AC so they were naturally heavier than any of the other legacies, not to mention they were turbo'd so theres more weight there too. I'll have to dig up some part #s and see if the used a different part than 92-94's

Thanks for letting me know that I can use my stock springs with the Koni inserts. I'm starting to get excited now, only thing is I wonder how bad they are going to rape me on shipping to Alaska. I'm gonna continue researching other struts that may work with minor modifications mainly for emergencies (like blew a strut and have to have car to get to and from work) Something that can be used until a replacement was shipped in.

Excellent info, dude. Thanks for doing some legwork on this as you're in an unique place to conduct this "research".

With respect to the original poster, should we start a new thread on strut interchangeability? I'd hate to derail this thread any more than it already has!

If the '91 works, then a whole world would open up to us!
