Re: Ignition Mechanism
Most definitely before next ski/snowboard season. Top of stevens pass, last couple runs, cars warm and defrosted before I get there. Sounds excellent.

Re: Ignition Mechanism
sounds like with your tumbler coming apart that could be your problem. the sensor for the shift interlock (and key release) is actually on the side of the trans but the wires come up behind the dash. if you want to check it out jump the black wire to the light green wire at the inhibitor switch on the passenger side of the trans and see if you get anything to happen when you wiggle the wires behind the dash. may be wasting your time if your tumbler is bad but it's something to try.

Re: Ignition Mechanism
I am just going to hold off and wait until I replace the tumbler. It needs to be done anyways and the parts will be here friday. No sense doing something twice.

Maybe not a whole rebuild just yet, but I would like to do cams (same ones as you) if I'm sure I can handle it with no issues. Having the second car around might very well open the door for a rebuild later on though.

Re: Ignition Mechanism
If I were you, I would have LAN do it. Your close enough for it to be not much of a hassle. And that man does DAMN clean work. I honestly could not have done my project without him.

Re: Ignition Mechanism
Well I picked up my new lock cylider today and went to install it. Was hoping for a quick 1 hour install job but a couple things held it up.
Mainly I cannot get the Screws out of the metal shroud on the bottom of the steering column. I got one of them, but then the second broke my phillips screwdriver that I just bought to do the job . I didn't have a long enough one to reach into the plastic shroud on the column. So I went to my 12v impact driver, but it didn't get the screw out with it. It might be dead though, so I am charging my battery to try it again tonight when I get home from work. Too bad I cannot get my manual impact driver on it, that thing would have it out so fast. This thing was a bigger PITA than I thought it would be. It's really not that bad, but it's not quite as easy as I was expecting.

Re: Ignition Mechanism
I keep having the same problem, I switched to my extra key (it actually looks different from my other key?) it works flawleslly, but I can still take the key out while the car runs
I think the keys wear out, not the ignition mech? anyways I found that pushing the stick all the way forward (like an 1/8th inch) past "park" would normally release the "bad" key. Last edited by Jay Wrix; 02-25-2011 at 04:58 PM. |

Re: Ignition Mechanism
Success. I found a small tab on the back of the switch. When engaged it locks the key into the lock cylinder. Not sure why it is there, but that was my problem. I will take a picture of the tab so everyone knows what I'm talking about. Looks like I will throw the new lock cylinder into my parts bin so I have it if I need it later.
