Re: EZ36 swap
Other than the marvelous 250,000 miles on your 4.111 [like those too!] SVX, is there another reason for you to consider the EZ36, other than lighter, more compact, etc.?
Someone with skill would have to take on that swap, wiring, computer, etc., but, it would be interesting .

Re: EZ36 swap
very nice tq curve, 10-12lbs off the nose of the car, smaller (easier to work on while in the car)... All pretty good plusses, but I dont think it is worth the time and effort yet. Maybe in 5 years as EG33's get scarcer and EZ motors become cheaper...

The question is, if someone had an EZ engine, is the swap possible? What would it take make it happen, to wire it? As it stands now, no one has perfected the Phase II 4EAT swap, as far as I know anyway, and I don't know that much .

Re: EZ36 swap
It would be easier I would imagine as with the Phase II trans swap you are mixing and matching different generations of Subaru management systems. If you did an EZ36 swap then you would want a current generation transmission and TCU as well ( or keep it simple and go manual). That way the ECU and TCU are staying mated as they were from the factory. The hardest part would be working out the harness through the SVX body...

Re: EZ36 swap
Another complication is that the new ECU's are tied into a chip in the key. So you would either need to also change out the ignition switch/harness or hack the ECU.
And I think Bobby is right about swapping the engine and trans together. The hardest part of the Phase 2 tranny working with the EG33 was figuring out the comunications between the EG33 ECU and the 2003 TCU.

Re: EZ36 swap
Meh, that's a good excuse for a push button start...

Re: EZ36 swap
From what I've heard, the code on the key is needed by the program on the ECU. So even with a push button start like they have in Kia's, you would need to have a properly coded key tied into the harness some where.

Re: EZ36 swap
Yeah, past tense. Tom spent hours with the FSM's determining what was needed between the two computers. And then we spent a few weekend sorting out and splicing all of the wiring.

Yeah, same basic thing. But the 5EAT/VTD has much more wiring and additional sensors that would need to be sourced and wired in.

Re: EZ36 swap
The EZ36 is also a motor with unusual internals and is not one that can be modified cheaply if future plans soar. The motors uses offset connecting rods to achieve the correct rod ratio with the increased stroke. Good motor for what it is, but not really the best candidate for a swap. I'd stick with the 30/30R motors. Far more "adaptable" in the long run than the 36.
