Isn't there a shift lock override button? Might be under the console on the 97s, my 92 has a button in front of the shifter that if pressed, lets you move the shifter out of Park without having the brake depressed or the key on. (It's still there on the newer subies, you just have to either remove the shifter surround, or remove a plug and use a screwdriver to press the button)
