The number is the key number. If you take your registration in to the SVX Dealership Parts Department, they will look up the key code using the VIN. The would be the original key number and pattern. If the key is different than the ignition key, it would have been changed. Good luck.

I have a key with the X on it, but it wont open the trunk. The lock is original, so I went to the dealership with my vin number to get a key made. They could not find my car in their system. They said Subaru didn't keep great records on older models.

That seems strange. My local dealership just looks up the VIN on the computer and it gives the code to make a new key.

Call a locksmith. It may cost $30-$110.00 for a key made... Out of curosity,have you tryed using the trunk release lever next to the gas tank popper opener?
