Need some advice please...
Hello all,
Well, it's almost time for me to part with my 1996 LSi SVX. The car has a few problems, mainly: 1) needs new front struts 2) need to replace cam seals, oil pump seals, etc. (leaks oil externally) Before I fix these I need to decide if I should make the repairs, or if I should just sell it as is. I've been quoted $750 for the seals (including a new timing belt), and the labor on the struts will run about $250 (including alignment). I already have the new struts from subaruparts.com. I guess my question is, how much is my car worth with these items fixed, or would I be better of letting the next guy fix it. Here are the specs on my car: 1996 LSi, Polo Green, 115K miles, new brakes all around (drilled/slotted/plated), tires have about 2/3 life left, tranny shifts well, interior is in very good shape, paint is in fair condition (paint on wing is chipped). Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Clarke |

If the leak is bad then fix it because running low oil might do damage to your engine. If its a small drip then its no biggie....i had a small leak in my car for a year before the leak got worse.

Its not a very difficult job to do . Its just very time consuming because of all the stuff you gotta take out to get to the seals. I watched TomsSVX do my front seals and it didnt look that tough....just took alot of time. I'm pretty sure with the help of everyone here you can get it done with no problem.

Honestly, if you pay to have that work done, I don't believe you'll recover your cash outlay if you turn right around and sell the car. Think I'd look-up the "book" value, add the cost of the new struts to be included in the deal, subtract the quotes for what it needs and make that my asking price. Good luck.

Allow me to offer a different perspective. The price you will get for your car is wholly dependent upon its condition. The better the condition the better the price. A car that rides rough and drips oil is suspect in many ways to the average car buyer. I say spend the bucks to get it right, then clean the car as though it were going to a show. Park it in a garage or under a car cover and advertise it for sale. I recently sold two of my cars to get them out of the driveway, and both sold to the first prospect to see them. And I got a lot more than book price for both of them because I had them looking, smelling and driving as though they were showroom new. You may not recoup your entire repair costs, but how would you know? You will certainly sell the car faster and to a satisfied customer, and that's what you really want to happen. Now, if you had a big ticket item that needed to be repaired/replaced, such as a windshield on a car that otherwise was only worth $2K, then that's another story. Your car however has a chance of bringing top dollar if you put it in top condition. Best wishes.

I agree with Preston. A would be buyer may not want to buy a car with the problems and not want the hassel to get it fixed. They will question the maintenance if the problems have not been fixed. I would wonder too. I would fix it and do the best job cleaning it up and get the most you can. Both the seller and buyer will be happier in the long run.

You guys are right... I wouldn't feel right selling the car to an uninformed buyer in the shape it's in. I just priced up ALL the parts to fix the car (seals, belts, new plugs, etc) and it worked out to be $200. It might take a weekend to change the seals, but I think I can get enough technical support from people here to get me through it. Hell, when I'm done, I might decide to keep it again...
Last question... assuming the car is fixed up, what would a fair price be? Thanks guys. |

I agree with...to get it fixed properly before you sell. It's a 96 LSi anyway...why do you want to get rid off it?
