Arrow My front Grille project

Hi all

I have started building my own grille from scrtach, it is inspired by the smallcar grille, but i have added my own touch, tell me what you think so far

I have used balsa wood for the initial construction, i am planing to use it to make a mold so it can be reconstructed in fiberglass

All pics here: from newest to oldest

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...stom%20grille/

There is also a thread here:

http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/showthread.php?t=29504

one question for anyone who can answer is, once i have a perfect balsa construct, what should i use to make the mould.../. i was thinking plaster???? any other ideas would be apreciated

The one displayed above is very nice, but in my opinion lacks some agressivity. JJ, if you want you can duplicate my front grille along with the vynil on the headlights.
And for the mold, i know a great stuff you can use (i am using it myself) and it is very cheap. I dunno what it is called in english, but it is used in the interior decoration of the building's ceilings. they install spotlights in it in a decorative way... white powder stuff mixed with water.... it gets hardened...

Danny thanks for the input man , i love the vinals on yor headlights, i had something similar on my old liberty, but matching silver is easyer than a pearl white... i'll give it a go when i get a chance.

I also liked the subtle look of my grille design it will mach my car, agressive is certanly what would match ur car haha

Also that white powdery stuff that harderns when mixed with water is called plaster in english thats what i am most likley gonna use , unless there is some other bulding product similar i dunt know off?

How are you going to make the final product? Are you going to do it yourself or are you sending it out somewhere to be made? If you are doing it, give us a 'how to'. So far it looks fine.

Oh.. stupid me, it is called plaster... anyway be sure to use liquid
soap as the isolator between plaster and fiberglass.

Plaster is the cheapest you can find in the market (110 lbs of plaster powder costs $5 over here). There are other alternatives like liquid rubber which solidifies to become flexible rubber. This is the best product you can use to make molds, but it costs toooooooooooooo much .

If you need any help, just ask me. (I can give you few tips before you go with the project, especially about the mixture of ingredients and their use..)

Yes. Danny is right. Ideally, you want to use RTV Rubber. It does cost some money but that is the cost of R&D. You don't want to know what I've done to grills on SVXes.

Consider contacting Alvey Reels Australia in Brisbane (Bruce Alvey). They can make the mold and do small production runs for people in graphite, fibreglass and a polyester material similar to car bumpers.

This is one of the few costs of R&D on SVXes.

Consider contacting Alvey Reels Australia in Brisbane (Bruce Alvey). They can make the mold and do small production runs for people in graphite, pressure molded fibreglass and a polyester material similar to car bumpers. Maybe get a group buy going?

powder coated the grill. A lot of plastics will take the heat of 250F for a good 10 minutes. The grill will melt around 200.

Learning has a price.
