The AL4328X is only 95 amps? Crap when I got mine I was told it was 110 AMP, now I find out its only 95. Thats why my voltage is only at 12V when I'm sitting at a light with my subs on.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. How long have you had the Bosch in your SVX? Any problems?

About a year, and my stereo really beats on it. That was why I when out of my way to buy a 110 amp one.
I had a 90 amp one that lasted about 2 weeks before I got this one.
Now I guess I'll be looking to buy one that will put out 110 or more.

I don't want to get stuck with no power.

Try here for auto parts at a good price.

They are in New Jersey and they ship all over.

Usually have most stuff in stock -- if not, they get it quick.

Bad electrical connections and batteries kill alternators. If there's too much load on the system, the alternator will eventually die.

Sometimes a battery is bad right out of the box - it's uncommon, but far from unheard of. Bad wiring is the second killer, and it's usually a ground cable hidden somewhere in a hard-to-access corner and covered in grime and muck.

A battery with too much internal resistance will overload an alternator. Usually batteries that have been completely discharged are the culprits, but sometimes they're bad off the shelf or have simply just reached the end of their life span.

Depending on how much time you want to invest, your best bet may be to simply replace the battery with a new one. Many places offer a prorated warranty, so if it's a new battery it shouldn't cost very much to do this. Second, carefully check and clean every major cable in the engine compartment - or better yet, replace them. Even if they're securely attached and clean, frequently the crimped connectors are the weak link - or sometimes the cable is damaged somewhere inside the insulation. Whatever the case, they're not terribly expensive, there usually aren't very many of them, and they're all fairly easy to replace. A good car stereo shop can replace all of them with much nicer and larger cable for very little money.

...or just buy the lifetime alternator warranty and keep swapping them out. Not such a bad solution actually.

Just out of curiosity why would you go with a reman one from a factory like that anyways? Look in your phone book under starters and alternators and my guess is you have a local shop that'll rebuilt your unit. Usually for about $100+-. They typically do a great job and your warranty is a local warranty. You can't do better than that unless you buy a OEM new one!

Regarding remanufactured alternators

Don't know that this applies in all regions, but my mechanic, whose primary business used to be rebuilding alternators (and radiators), told me recently that it now costs him less to buy reman parts off the shelf. Do any independent mechanics still do this sort of work?

Alt

Hi Tapper,

The alts been in for 2 days and so far so good.
Glad there is a 12 month warranty on Bosch Alts since the thing costs $190+. I will keep all apprised if this third alternator fails.
Anyone know of any other brands? Just in case.

FYI:
1. belts are fine. no oil or ps fluid leaks on them
2. I cleaned the negative ground
3. bought stuff for wire mod but too scared to put it in after reading the New Zealander's fusible link comments.
4. Battery was fully charged (like last time).

Let me know how yours turns out too.

Adrian (Bizarre)

I bought a 80 amp alt from Advance Auto Parts in PA in April for $188.00. I have had no problem with it. works great.
The part number was 14456 with a max output of 124 amps.

There's 3 shops that just do starters and alternators within 15 minutes of my house. Charge about $125 to rebuild just about any alternator. Much cheaper than an SVX alt but about $90 more than the autozone lifetime warranty alt in my BRAT that has now been replaced 3 times since the SVX got hers rebuilt.
