leaking oil???

I just found out that the person I bought my car from had the oil changed before I bought it and whoever changed it put way too much oil in and now their is oil pooring out the seals. If I let some oil out to the normal level will it stop leaking or at least slow down, or is it too late to reverse the damage? I dont have a grand to spend on getting all the seals replaced and so the car will end up sitting for a year or two (my neon is my main focus)

attempting to 'reverse' damage by nullifying the cause is futile. if it leaks now, it will continue to leak until it is either fixed, or the points at which it leaks are gummed with hardened oil and dirt, as mine are.
one way to find out if it leaks is to wash the underbody, then drive. if you smell burning oil, youve got a leak.

Question

Is it an absolute that an overfilled crankcase always leads to leaking seals? I know overfilling can cause the oil to foam & I presume, to then overheat. Anyone with a legitimate opinion?

Ron.

The head gaskets always leak on the Neons, of course so do the cam sensors and the rear mains. Oh yeah the valve covers tend to make a mess sometimes too. Wait! Are we talking about the Neon or the SVX?

Oil leaks.

I don't think over filling the sump would cause engine oil leaks. Of cause it depends how much, but there is a lot of space in there.

I am of the opinion that this type of oil leaks can be caused by blocked engine breathers. Crankcase pressure will build up to leak out of the seals and gaskets, taking the oil with it.

I had this situation on another type of engine, leaked so much oil out the crankshaft seal that it covered the underside of the car. I found and fixed the blockage in the engine breather and the oil leaks stopped. Still got the same crankshaft oil seal there.

Try pulling one of the cam cover breather pipes off, where they plug into the air delivery pipe at the throttle body to see if the oil leaks stop. May take a day or two. Won't upset anything being disconnected.

Harvey.

Youd have to have a crapload of oil pressure. I tend to agree with Harvey, either that or the seal is just dried up and bad. Was the car driven alot in the years before you boguht it? If he hadn't driven it alot and you just started daily driving it that could be the case.
Change the oil , half synth blend, and replace one of the quarts with lucas oil, great stuff, my car no longer leaks out of the left valve cover. that use to drip onto the floor and make a nice pool. The crank seal tends to be leaky on our cars, may just want to have it done.

i think its what i experience(d). i had cracked vacuum hoses, and probably bad PCV valve, and was leaking the oil from everywhere
mainly cam seals.

now replaced PCV and vacuum hoses, breathing hoses and wounder whats the result. If the dipstick does not pop up again does it mean that ventilation system works fine?

ill clean the underengine and will let you if it stopped the leaking oil.
